Mako Mermaids

A Guest Post by Angela, age 10

Netflix asked my mom if one of her daughters would write a review about this show. She chose me and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Mako Mermaids is a series that’s set on a made-up island, Mako. There are three main mermaids: Nixie, Sirena and Lyla. My first thought about this show was: Oh boy, this is going to be stupid. But then I watched the first episode and I got sucked in. It is very interesting and humorous. I like Nixie’s adventurous and perky conduct, and Lyla’s bossy attitude, and Sirena’s romantic behavior.

I like a lot about this show. It is not silly at all, except for some humor here and there, and it is really fun to watch. My sisters agree! We watch it as a family (okay, except without my dad and one of my brothers) and it’s just a lot of fun.

Two thumbs’ up!

Margaret the Mom here. I hesitated to let the girls start this series because I agreed with Angela: it looked really silly. You know what? It is. It’s silly and fun. It reminds me of the shows that I use to watch, like Gilligan’s Island and I dream of Jeannie, where the plot lines are full of enormous holes but you don’t care ’cause hello?! There’s popcorn!

We’ve had a ton of fun watching this together. The mermaids are cute and goofy teenagers–modest, for the most part, despite their being mermaids–and the dating and flirting themes are handled well (so far). We haven’t started the second season yet so I can’t vouch for that one…although I did peek at the plot lines and we’re losing Nixie! Sigh.

Let us know what you think if you watch it. Let Angela know! She was a good sport to write this.

It's so hard to find television shows that are fun and appropriate for families to watch. Thank you for the great review, Angela!

Ramona and I loved H2O: Just Add Water, and so we watched Mako Mermaids with trepidation, because … well, because it just wasn't H2O. 🙂 It was still silly fun, but not the same as the original. 🙂 We are watching the second season now, and the guy who looks like a Ken doll is driving us crazy.
