And I’m sure that you did, too. Did you happen to catch my friend Erin’s suggestion in the combox? I was tempted (sorely tempted) to add a splash (just a splash!) of vodka to my orange juice.
But I didn’t.
I couldn’t!
I needed strong coffee to see me through.
Here are a few scenes from our day…
This is why I buy them seeds, you know. Jem can—and did—work his way through an entire book while smacking away on these sunflower seeds.
And then he drank seventeen quarts of water.
Moving on to the most welcome sight I came across all day…
I call this one “Grab your books, kids! We’ve got work to do!”
As of yesterday, Baby George is no longer referred to as Baby George. Now he goes by “Babyzilla” and is doing his proud best to live up to this title. Is your classroom just a bit too ordered? Babyzilla can help! 9-year-old daughter working quietly on the computer? Babyzilla is there to jam it! Dry erase board in need of a red Sharpie?
Well. We all know that white is highly overrated.
Forget the spelling of irregular verbs and the complicated math equations. This kid promises to be my biggest challenge as a teacher this year.
Good thing he’s so cute.
Moving on…
This last shot was taken at the end of a long day. Cate is reading to our brand new kindergartner while the 2nd grader & toddler listen in.
I call it simply, “Mom’s Reward.”
Happy feast of the Nativity of Mary! May she intercede for our families today and always.

That last photograph is beautifully shot.
We are celebrating the nativity of Mary with a chocolate birthday cake after dinner.

off to store to buy makings for carrot cake for the big birthday bash tonight. sorely tempted to make a pound cake SOAKED in rum. I'm holding on by my nails these last few days and can't fathom another 178 days of this.

We've got a babyzilla, too! He's also remarkably cute, so I think it must a general characteristic of the species. Congratulations on surviving the first day! (We're on week six, which also deserves congratulations. I've never been this organized before!)
scmom (Barbara) says
May she intercede for our families today and always. Amen, amen.
Glad you survived. I never doubted you (but I think that vodka may have jeopardized your success, so good choice.). 😉
PS It's 5 o'clock in Ohio. Cheers.
Mary says
Margaret, how in the world do you stay so calm in the stormy first day of school? Yikes! I have to learn from you for sure! IF you get a chance, you'll understand (maybe!! haaa haa) my posts from yesterday then today!
Happy Bday to Mary too and May she cover you in her blessed Mantle always, esp. this school year 😉
God bless,
Mary

That book Jem was reading was my FAVORITE book as a kid. I loved to escape into it and read it several times!
Glad you survived day 1. WE haven't had ours yet (still moving into a new house so no need to go crazy starting now!).
Elizabeth C. says
Love it…
Babyzilla in this house is in a form of a 3 year old girl. She insist that we are not in school, no not "do" school, and that her momma must be out of her mind saying she's a teacher. It took half the day for her to be convinced we "really do learn here and yes…I can teach you your ABCs.
Glad to hear your 1st day went well. At least we have our humor.
Genevieve says
we call ours destructocons… they come in the form of twin girls!lol
Marybeth says
ohhh, I like the term destructocons! Mine are two and a half years old and 4 days younger than Baby George… I mean babyzilla 🙂
School was very rough today. I am glad we have 10 weeks under our belts or I might be very tempted to find solace in the yellow bus… Well, maybe not THAt rough 😉
regan says
love that last shot!
looks like they are thriving, not merely surviving.
i agree with barb, the vodka thing probably wouldn't be such a good idea…especially with babyzilla to look after.
cheers!

Oh I love that last picture! And the one of baby George asleep in his chair… well, I know the sigh of relief you felt then.
