We are in the market for a new camera. Not surprisingly, my husband is wary of buying me another expensive model because of my previous record with all things small, black and electronic.
Here’s where you come in. Having seen the beautiful photographs on all your blogs, I am wondering if you can recommend a reasonably priced digital camera to a girl who’s prone to breaking them. So far my experience has been that digital cameras are pretty touchy! (dropping them in shallow pools of water notwithstanding). Something sturdy and reliable is what I’m after.
One last request: who do you recommend for on-line developing?

I like canon powershots. You seem to get the most bang for your buck with them. Five megapixels is the minimum you want, but six and sevens are pretty reasonably priced now.

So what you’re saying is, you need a camera that is waterproof and won’t break when dropped….
Have you tried the Fisher Price variety?
🙂

I can’t recommend a camera, as mine is four years old and probably not made anymore (knowing the electronics market). It is a Canon and has a fabulous lens — dh bought it just for the lens.
But I can recommend picture printing service — snapfish.com. It’s great. You upload your pics and they mail them to you in just a few days. And it’s cheap!

We have also used Snapfish. You can either get your pics in the mail or, if you are in a super big hurry, you can have them printed at a store of your choice in about an hour.
As far as camera recommendations, we have only had ours since December and I haven’t tested it’s durability. I like the feel of it though. It is a Fuji Fine Pix.

Margaret, we own a Sony Cyber-shot 3x with 7.2 megapixels. (I wouldn’t have known all that if I hadn’t looked, lol!)
I like it very much – easy to use and comfortable in the hand. I don’t know where we got it – I will have to ask Bill – but I believe it was online.

Our family uses snapfish as well, and the thing I like about it is you can pre-pay for pictures and get them at a cheaper price. 250 pictures is $25.00 if you pre-pay. Then when you order pictures, you just have to pay for the shipping, which is fairly inexpensive. Also, if your not happy with your order, you can print out a pre-paid mailing label and ship the prints back free of charge and they will refund your credit card for those prints you didn’t like. I must sound like I work for snapfish, but I don’t!

I have a Nikon Coolpix 4600. It has the usual annoying slow-snap of a digital camera, but the photos are high resolution (great for zooming in on just a face). I try to keep it away from the kids, but it has had a few minor drops.
Check with your insurance company (homeowners). I have a rider for my computer that doesn’t cost much per year and it includes my digital camera (because it’s a periphery) and covers any damage of any kind. That Nikon is a replacement for an older Nikon that did get dropped hard. Might be worth it for next time.

I have both a Canon Digital Rebel and a Canon 30D, but neither is reasonably priced. LOL
My Mom has a Panasonic Lumix, and I think it is pretty nice. 🙂

I’ve used snapfish, winkflash, and shutterfly for online developing. I have been pretty satisfied with all of them. (Although I thought my Christmas photos from winkflash were a little dark and had a mini-crisis over that!) Snapfish seems to be the cheapest on prints. Shutterfly has a wider variety of photo card choices (including multi-image designs) if you ever do those. I bet wal-mart is pretty cheap, but I’ve never looked.

I have a Canon Powershot as well. It is 5mp and 4? zoom. I love it. I would buy more zoom next time, but I’ve gotten some very nice larger prints from Shutterfly with only 5mp. And my daddy told me never to talk money, but it was only $200 at Best Buy. I’ve had it for a year and been very pleased. Have FUN!

I love my Canon Powershot!

I have a Canon Rebel but it’s not very reasonably priced. It’s a great camera!!! I don’t use any online printing places but use my own printer the Epson RX700 which prints quality prints.

I do not have a digital camera to recommend, since I use the FILMED camera (!!). I am a faithful snapfish user, and you can try it out for FREE the first time you use it. I love that I can send my FILM into them, i get to SEE my prints online before they come in the mail, and I can share them with family members who are far (of which there are a few). Then a nice email tells me that my film is on its way!
You can do all that with digital too, download and see/share/receive. 🙂
I was going to agree with Nutmeg, and suggest Fisher Price!?

Canon Powershot A620. Reasonably priced, 7.1 mp. Love it!!

I like shutterfly (shutterfly.com) for developing. Can’t help with the camera advice, but looks like you got some great advice already! 🙂

I had a Fuji Fine Pix but was never happy with it, primarily because of the shutter lag. I had lots of beautiful pictures of the back of my toddler’s head. I now have a Kodak Easy Share C875 and I LOVE it. It has very little shutter lag, it takes beautiful movies and besides having a bunch of different scene settings from which I can pick, it also has a mode where I can adjust a bunch of settings, if I want to play like a pro. However, when I dropped it on its lens when the lens was extended it broke (and I bought a new one immediately).

I have the HP Photosmart R725, and bought one for my brother too.
I got them on amazon for $176.
It has 6.2 mp and rechargable batteries. Uses sandisk card to hold pics which I can insert into laptop or printer slots to transfer photos.
it has a big clear view screen for taking & looking at photos (there is no tiny viewfinder to look through)
the lens doesn’t move in & out – less that can possibly break!
I use shutterfly.com
