When I was studying photography in art school and needed a break from the darkroom, I would wander up to the mezzanine to see what the graphic artists were up to. I stood there in awe of what these clever souls could do with a charcoal pencil and some acrylic…
…and I thought, “What fun! What imagination!”
Mélanie Watt, the author and illustrator of the Scaredy Squirrel books, is one such artist. Her books are bright and bold and very funny. Her sense of perspective is delightful and her wit is not to be missed.
Above all, her main character is just a honey!
I mean, really. Look at the cute little face of this rodent. Do you not just fall in love with him?
Not surprisingly, Scaredy Squirrel can go a little nuts about a lot of things. Having sweaty paws and food caught in his teeth are just a couple of his insecure, germ-aversive phobias. He is afraid to even leave his tree for fear that a shark might bite him. If that happens, though, he’s ready!
Or so he thinks.
You can learn more about Scaredy Squirrel at his website. Even better, though, would be to wander up to your mezzanine when you need a break (i.e. head up the road to the local library) to get a copy of these books.

How funny!! We spent Sunday afternoon at the Library and I picked up Scaredy Squirrel at the last minute. It’s easily been the boy’s favorite story this week!
