Thought I’d check in to let you know what we’ve been up to, and to hear (via the com-box) what you’ve been doing, too.
It’s Sunday.
You should stop in to say hello.
(I’m waiting………..)
My weekend started out at a cross-country meet—the first one of the season.
May I (humbly…proudly…because I’m his mom) tell you how our Joe did? He got 2nd place out of a group of…oh…around 70? I’m like, Dude! That’s my kid! I gave birth to him!
(Not that he learned how to run from me.)
(I know how he likes his oatmeal, though.)
Standing at the finish line felt surreal, you know? It looked like this:
But felt like this:
Tell me you understand, please.
From there Joe and I met the rest of the family, who were at a campground outside of town. My friend Tina had reserved a group site for the families in our homeschool co-op, because she is a tent-camping fanatic who likes that we join her in her madness.
I am a tent-camping fanatic too, incidentally, but not this weekend.
Why?
He is why.
Don’t let that winsome grin betray you. This kid was a great big grinky face for most of the day, due to whatever toddler gripes he’s harboring.
Whatever the cause of his toddler angst, it was good to go home at the end of the evening and settle into our own beds.
(Not that we spent a lot of time there.)
(Like I said, the kid was crabby.)
Still. On a day when our nation’s flags were being flown half-mast, it was good–nay, necessary–to be reminded of all the things we hold dear.
The friends…
The family…
And the babies…
Oh, the babies.
How we love love LOVE these babies.

Haha! I love how your husband is holding him smiling even though he's flailing about. How loving 🙂
What am I doing this weekend? Putting together the seating chart for our wedding reception and packing to move to MN. And really trying not to think of the million things I need to get done before our wedding in two weeks.
Your weekend looks more relaxing!!
Melanie B says
Oh your toddler and mine are two peas in a pod. Ben has been so crabby all week. Just cranky, cranky, cranky. And he too has perfected the art of throwing himself backward and writing.
KC says
Joe's got quite the long stride. Wow!
minnesotamom says
Allison, with a wedding in two weeks you should not be having a relaxing weekend. You should be drinking lots of caffeine, however.
Melanie, did you mean to say "writhing" ? If not, I'm jealous.
KC, I know! And on grass, to boot.
Melanie B says
Margaret,
LOL. Yes, I did mean writhing.

I'm very impressed with Joe's success! Of course you are a proud mama.
I love tent camping too (sadly, more than most of the family), but I have to admit that I never tried it with littles. I had to wait until our son was in Cub scouts to get DH to go!
What a good way to spend yesterday — family, friends, and love (even with a cranky toddler). That's a good way to live our lives while we still remember.
Yesterday was a slow day here. I grew up in Northern NJ (seeing the Towers every time I went down the hill to our home). We visted them often as we were the official tour guides every time out-of-state family visited. Also, my husband went to college and worked in NYC for a while. So 9/11 is very visceral to us, although we have only second- or third-hand connections to those actually lost. With our kids 12 and 9, we thought it was time we spent more time explaining the events to them. They knew terrorists had flown planes into the Towers and a lot of people died. We showed them just a few — very selected — clips from a CNN documentary we have on DVD. Mostly the planes hitting, the long distance smoke shots, and the dust in the streets. We don't want them hearing or seeing more in school and not being prepared. Yes it was sad and hard, but it's history in their lifetime. These images will be used so often, we wanted them to have context and to be able to explore them with us.
I think there's got to be a way to balance not overwhelming kids (who don't remember it themselves) with also not glossing over it. We're still working on the balance. But think about it — there are now teenagers who were alive, but not old enough to actually remember the day, if they didn't live it.
Sorry to ramble. Guess this is something I'm still pondering…

I think that you should discuss your husband's gas with him in private rather than speculating about it in front of the entire internet.
scmom (Barbara) says
"Not that he learned how to run from me."
Um, maybe he learned to run FROM you. Mean ol' mama that you are. Haha. Just sayin'. Actually you said it first.
Btw, I have been proud of waaaay less. Way.
Hope George gets happy soon. Maybe he wants to come and see me. I'll give him lollies.;-)
minnesotamom says
Elizabeth, you make some good points. How can our children understand this day if we don't discuss it with them?
bearing, you're evil.
Barbara, HA. Loved your pun and did not even think of it the first time 'round. Yes, of course, he learned to run from me and my chore list.
Sarah says
Well done, Joe!! And dear George, gosh well, he still looks so.darn.cute that I cannot help but smile every time I see him. Of course, I'm on the other side of a computer screen and not where you are sitting. Hope his days get much better!
As for me, I am doing not much. The doctor made me do exactly this. Can I admit that some days I am a bit more mopey about it than others? This morning especially when we came home from mass and all I was thinking about was the centennial celebration back at my home parish that I was suppose to be atttending…the beautiful mass with full choir, the chicken dinner, the parishioners that I'd grown up with, my family, the hamburgers…did I mention I'm awfully hungry these days??!!
Any way, I got over it after sitting outside for a while, but I am sure lamenting over things I'm missing. See, I said I was mopey. I know staying home and laying low is much better for me and baby, but some days are just easier than others.
Okay, so you didn't really wanna hear my complain on a beautiful MN Sunday did you? On the bright side, this time is offering a lot of family time for us and extra time to just enjoy 'being' and that is a pretty sweet thing to have right now.
Hopefully this painfully long comment ended on a much more positive note. I blame the hormones 🙂
Happy Sunday evening to you and yours and a wonderful school week ahead!!
