The same sweet anonymous family blessed our stoop this morning. They have been doing this for years now.
A tiny bottle full of lilies of the valley, and five charming May Day baskets for my candy-consuming children, each with an inscription honoring the Blessed Mother.
My personal favorite was
In Beauty enshrined,
O Mary, make speed
To the help of mankind
(These Marian tags mean that I can safely rule out our Protestant friends next door, correct? Then again, maybe not…)
I wish I knew who was remembering us each year! And why–oh, why–did I not leave something on the step for them? It’s like the shoemaker’s elves, only Catholic. If they think that I might catch them, they might stop.
Plus I just didn’t think of it.
It wasn’t you, was it? If it was, please know we’re praying for you!

how wonderful! you are blessed indeed by such kindness, and the anonymous family are surely blessed too by spreading it. and I love that dear statue – I have the same one!
minnesotamom says
Thank you, Sarah, for your sweet remarks.
And to everyone else that's just reading these comments and not saying nothin'…
Shame on you! Say hi! š

Margaret,
Go to Google calendar and set yourself an email reminder for next year April 30th so you don't forget.
Such pretty, pretty flowers. God bless your anonymous donors and you.
minnesotamom says
Melanie, thank you. It's done.
My mom brain may be thoroughly addled most days but this is not to say we can't be better. Thanks again for the prompting.
Melanie B says
No problem. I've got addled mom brain too. That's why I love my Google calendar with email reminders. It's the only way I remember to go to confession, to celebrate important events like the kids' baptism days, saints' days, etc.
Oh and it's how my husband remembers sweet anniversaries like giving me the engagement ring too. Just the fact that he put that into his Google calendar makes me swoon. It is the most romantic thing because it shows how much he cares.
KC says
Every year I want to do this and every year I forget! How wonderful for you to have someone remember you year after year.
minnesotamom says
It's wonderful, KC…and unnerving! I want to do something back for them but don't know what.
It's a bit like grace, isn't it? A free gift that we try to reciprocate, yet we can't help but feel that we're falling short.
'Cause we are.

How wonderful to be remembered!
Where did you get that statue? I am trying to find small things to place throughout my parts of the house (we are living with/caring for a non-Catholic relative and can't have anything too large in view).
minnesotamom says
It was a gift, Cath–sorry! Not sorry that it was a gift, of course, but that I can't tell you where I got it.
I really do love this statue. She is my kitchen madonna.

I WISH I would think of doing such lovely things for my friends and neighbors. May 1st always sneaks up on me, and we, too, are always left with sweet little May baskets. And I don't know who leaves them. Leaving something for the leavers is a lovely idea — I hope I remember it next year! š
Karen E. says
Melanie,
Yay on the Google calendar idea! Perfect!
(And my word verification on this comment is "realiz") š
minnesotamom says
As in, we must REALIZ our potential.
(I know, I know. So corny, but it's late and I'm hopped up on coffee.)

How thoughtful… š

I'm not familiar with the tradition. Do you have to give the baskets on the 1st? Or could you give them some other time during the month?
