Minnesota Winters: How We Cope

February 26, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Minnesohta, Minnesota Me, Spiritual Growth 18 Comments

Part III

(You can read Part I here and Part II here. )

Ed. Note: This is a test of the Emergency Blogging System. Do people read blogs on Friday night? I intend to find out.

My husband cleaned the basement thoroughly (thank you, Husband!) and now the mice have no place to play.

Poor mice.

In sorting through some errant camping stuff, he found a battery-operated thermostat. He brought it up and set it on a shelf in our kitchen, where it mocked me this morning with its digital pronouncement: 52.7 degrees.

Time to get new batteries.

The actual temperature was eight degrees.

Thank you, God, for another day where we get to cope! Well, we are Minnesotans, after all; this is what we do. And when the temperature drops (and drops, and drops) we face the music and we fight back.

In other words, we bundle up and we go outside anyway.

Snow Day VI

Correction: the kids bundle up and go outside, while I stand in the doorway and applaud their courage.

Snow Day VII

Okay, I may go out and take a photo or two. For example, here’s a shot of my son’s fort.

MN Winter VI

Note that I’ve labeled it for your convenience.

MN Winter V

I happen to be extremely fond of labels.

MN Winter VII

Do you have a problem with this?

MN Winter VIII

Please let me know and I promise to stop…

MN Winter IX

…but only if you pay me off in Euros.

What? I’ve been aching to go back to France.

So here’s a question and I’ll make it worth your while. Did I or didn’t I go inside that fort? Wager a bet and I’ll reward you tomorrow, with a post and a prize for participating.

Dunno what the prize is gonna be, just yet.

Pig VII
Don’t look at me! I’m not going in that thing.

It’s Friday night and my brain is lazy.

Did you know that, according to a recent study, a glass of wine a few times a week improves your thinking? (HT: my dear sweet older sister)

I’m just sayin’.

(Or should that be, I’m just thinkin’?)

A glass of wine, Norah Jones and you. There’s no better way to end the day!

See you tomorrow.

Update: The “Did she or didn’t she?” contest is now closed! I’ll announce the winner soon; stay tuned.

I am guessing that you did cave (ha, ha) and go inside.

When I first read the part about the temperature, I thought, "Wow, you keep your house really cold." When you said it was only eight degrees then I realized you were talking about outside! 😉 Here in Wyoming we have a balmy 16 with a low of zero.

Regarding Friday nights, I am waiting for my husband to get home so I can eat dinner with him. The kids have already eaten but it is too early for bed. I am killing time on the computer until I can either put them to bed or eat with my husband. When I saw that you had a post up, I instantly checked it because I always love your posts!

No way. You *so* didn't go in the fort. 😉

I read on Friday nights. 🙂 If I can, at least. I actually find I have more time for blog reading/writing on the weekends, so I'll stockpile for weekday posting.

    Two words: chocolate wine.

Have you tried it? D-i-v-i-n-e. 🙂

Kids are down to bed, so I'm scrolling through the feed reader right now, so yes reading your blog post on a Friday night! I'm tired from a long work week and a sick little one so while I'm not drinking a nice wine, I'm sipping some decaf from those good Catholic guys– mystic monk coffee. yum.

As for you, I think you talked big and joked with kids about avalanche and cold but you're so adventurous you HAD to go in the fort!

I bet you went in the fort. Someone from the upper mid west could not resist, during a winter of so… much snow. Have a great Friday night.

Quoting Sarah: "Two words: chocolate wine."

YUM. That's all I have to say about that. Also very good on ice cream. Or alone.

I wish Fridays weren't so quite in the blog world (or the entire weekend really). I find myself aimlessly checking over and over and there is nothing new. Oh well. As for the fort, I'm guessing you've already seen it (is it really good fort making weather right now?) so I say you didn't go in today but you have before.

Waiting for a hockey-game attending husband here….yep, reading blogs. 🙂 It must be February, I ran errands this morning in -3 temps and it didn't even phase me.
Love the fort. My kids would be jealous…our snow has been most disappointing this year.
I guess you went in because of course we are going to get to see a picture of you bravely entering that rockin' fort and impressing your son. 🙂

You *SO* did go into that fort! We all know you'd not be able to live with yourself if you didn't go in there – just to prove that you could!!!

Yes, checking blogs while awaiting info on my dear grandfather. (I also blogged about it…)

Anyway, yes, kids and snow forts made out of hard-packed snow ROCK!

I'm going to guess you did, because you had to rescue George or something from something nefarious. 🙂
    And love the guinea pig.

I read blogs on a Friday night. It's a guilt free time.

I vote that you did go inside.

I'm gonna say yes, you went in. Because they creep me out, too, and maybe your courage will give me courage. Thankfully Kiddo is more of an open top snow fort kind of kid still.

Saturday morning reader. You DID go in the fort. And had tea and crumpets. Or a shot of vodka in an ice glass.

You better have, because all Minnesota Mom's enter the forts. Usually we make the kids leave!
