Minnesota Winters

February 8, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Keeping It Real, Minnesohta, Minnesota Me 10 Comments

How We Cope (Part I)

Ed. Note: These photos were taken on a winter’s day at dusk in Minnesota. They are bluish-cold and coldish-blue. Take pity on the photographer!

This was our mean ol’ thermometer last week.

MN Winter II

It’s mad at me because of that yarn at its base.

MN Winter I

I really ought to just cut that off. It’s a holdover from a wee frozen wreath that melted…oh…back in ’97 or so.

It’s time.

I need to just let it go.

But going back to the business at hand: How do we cope when the weather’s so cold? We plan an outing, naturally.

MN Winter X

We have our children do all the grunt work.

MN Winter XI

Note that no-coat Scandinavian hardiness! By the end of the season, we are all half Finnish.

Minus the sled dogs.

Anyway, the outing is to the library.

MN Winter IV

Naturally.

Though only one of us gets out of the car.

MN Winter III

He’s my helpful lad, one of my hardy boys. (Not to be confused with the Hardy boys, in which case I would have named him Shaun or Parker.) The rest of us stay toasty & warm while he checks out all our books on hold.

There are at least three dozen.

They oughtta last us…a day.

To be cont.

Updated to Add: There!

MN Winter XII

I just went out and cut that yarn off! I knew it would bother you (and me) ’til I did.

Note that the balmy temps continue.

I'm with you Margaret! The library has become our constant friend/destination when we go to 'town'. I almost always have books on hold these days and they recognize me (and hubby) as soon as we walk in and they pull our held items.
My mom laughed when I told her last week when we were at the library we picked up 35 items!! I keep thinking that I need a stockpile for when baby comes…one of these days!!
It's also a fun game we play to see how many items we can actually fit in our library bag!! lol.

    Stay warm!!

I cope with bacon, leftover pancakes, fresh whipped cream, coffee and more whipped cream. There's also caramel on top of the coffee with the whipped cream. Did I say whipped cream? We're a happy little troupe this morning šŸ™‚

    I miss the library!

It doesn't seem that cold with all those pretty colors on your thermometer. šŸ™‚

We live in San Diego County, and, needless to say, never experience winter as you do. Sometimes we are a wee bit jealous. Silly, huh? You are probably thinking we are ridiculous. Thanks for sharing your photos! God bless!

LOL – I trained Mary to do the same thing at the library! I especially love being able to pull up my library account in the parking lot on my iPhone and read off the list of books on the reserve shelf to look for.

I am seriously tempted to take the crew to MOA for a day to forget the frozen landscape for a few hours!

First, Tracy, going to MOA? INVITE US, really! I need a getaway badly! *Yes, just went out the weekend before last, but does that count?

Also, Margaret, can we talk vans? Can you tell me the name of the van that you have? I was telling Tim about the style of van we should look into and I didn't know the name of it, but after seeing yours, that's the one I was trying to describe! Not mini-vanny, and not the big-vanny type…
