In May, the Month the Mary

May 1, 2008 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Minnesota Me, Special Events, Spiritual Growth 9 Comments

Happy May Day!

Happy Month of Mary!

Happy Feast of the Ascension! (Even though they have transferred this feast to Sunday in my state, it is still Ascension Thursday in my heart. I am a little bit of a rebel in that regard.)

There is so much that one could do today, it will be hard to choose.

  • We have made some simple May Day baskets (very simple, of the lots & lots of sugar sort) and delivered them.
  • We have received a set of May Day baskets from the same dear anonymous family that gets us every year. If it is you and you are reading this, thank you! Be assured that your efforts are appreciated and anticipated. How you manage to deliver these to our door by 6:00 a.m. every year I do not know…though my boys are slightly disappointed that their predawn vigil was cut short (again!) by that demon sleep.
  • We will be doing some of the activities listed on this site. (Thank you, Jamie!) We will also be making a set of holy water fonts in honor of Our Blessed Mother and while praying Ave after Ave for our sweet Alice. Could she be any craftier?
  • We will send up a bunch of bubbles up to heaven in honor of Our Lord’s Ascension. Believe it or not, part of Cate’s First Communion gift included some of the items from this collection…not very spiritual, granted, but very very cute…and while I was placing an order, I thought that I’d stock up on these. I have heard that they’ve got staying power. Now if only they came with enough wands to go around…

And that is it. Do not feel badly if you cannot do it “all” today. You have an entire month to honor Mary—an entire month to grow in holiness! Also, (and I say this in all honesty), please keep in mind that most of the above activities will be punctuated by Mom’s little impatient outbursts. Sadly, this is so true when it comes to feast days! Inevitably the children will A. Not listen well enough to all my careful narratives; B. Not glue their projects neatly enough despite my over-caffeinated admonishments; or (worst of all) C. Not thank their mommy loudly enough (or at all) despite her many efforts. Oh, woe is me when I feel unappreciated! Oh, where is my humility?

Like I said, we have an entire month to grow in holiness. : ) Heck, we have a lifetime!

We love you, Mary.

Ad Jesum per Mariam,

Oh Margaret, you are funny! I love your humor. We made May baskets today as well, and I even found myself saying, “Focus, everyone!” because they were laughing too much. Aren’t these activities supposed to be fun for the kids, Jill! 😉
Thanks for the great line-up of activities. There is so much. And, in addition, it is Labor Day here in Europe. (So Paul gets the day off!!)

Good luck! We are taking the entire month for Mary as we are in the works for our Mary garden. 🙂
My mother will be coming after the 15th (to ensure there won’t be any more frost in the mornings) and that’s our project. That’s about all I can do. I get too nutty when I plan more than one thing per month. I makes me grumpy! LOL! I hope you post pictures, and I love the idea of bubbles for the Ascension.

Oh, Margaret, I love your human-ness! &:o) I’m working on that learning-patience-during-projects thing and so appreciate hearing that I’m not the only one! May is such a good month to learn from our Heavenly Mother! (I love the bubbles for the Ascension idea, btw! Wish it weren’t snowing here today so we could do it!)

Thank you Margaret!! You are always so sweet!! Doesn’t it just feel special being May, Mary’s month? October is the same way. There are so many feasts and fun things to do! I’ll be praying for you in the chapel tonight!

    Love you too!
