It’s here. (Cue ominous music.)
The Minnesota Winter is here.
Yesterday the high temperature reached only 30 degrees if even. The freezing winds made it seem much, much worse.
We have no milk for breakfast and I don’t care.
I am not leaving the protective, 74-degree bubble that is my home.
Last night I had no choice, however. The three older kids had choir. I slowed the van to a roll and made them leap from it so that I didn’t have to get out. Don’t worry; they survived. They are of hearty stock on their father’s side.
Still.
When I picked them up an hour later, having myself never left the protective 74-degree bubble that was my van, the kids made a proposal that sounded good both then and now.
So be warned.
My kids have suggested that these arctic temps warrant a name change at my blog.
You tell me. Does “Hawaiian Mom” have a nice ring to it?
With love & blessings & a frozen nose,
(Yes, I am Margaret in Minnesota…but in late November the question becomes: Why??)

I can only imagine just how cold it gets there. Brr!!! And milk is highly overrated, in my opinion. Calcium can be gotten elsewhere, tight? LOL! How about Artic Mom? Corny? Not too original?

Why indeed, I am asking myself this same question. And given that this nonsense goes on for six months I have to think I am some sort of crazy. We have been out of milk since coming home from Memphis, so today is the day I must get out. :0 Love and blessings! Tina

Oh dear, I am colder just reading about it. Stay in that bubble as much as possible. I sure would.

I can relate. Before moving to the warm comfort of Arizona, we lived in Laramie, Wyoming where it is not unheard of to get to 50 below in the winter. We lived in married student housing which were built in the 1940’s and had very little insulation and all original windows (you know the kind single paned). We would wake up in the morning to ice an inch thick on the INSIDE of the windows. The wind also frequently blew about 30mph or more, so with a newborn, we did not go outside very often. Warm yourself up with some yummy hot cocoa, and snuggle with the little ones on the couch!

…maybe a little jaunt to visit your southern friends is in order?? (highs in the 60’s today)
Blowing some of our southern breezes your way….
🙂

Come visit me. I just got back from my five mile walk in short sleeves….And here, have a glass of iced tea 😉 Stay warm, Margaret!

I had the heat blasting so high in the van this morning I lulled our bundled up boys into morning naps on the way home from Mass! It’s just so hard to feel warm at all! I am all for pretending we’re in tropical weather – what a delightful fantasy. Perhaps I’ll put a little umbrella in my herbal tea today and pretend I’m on a beach somewhere…
Jennie C. says
Nah. I’d miss Minnesota Mom. But feel free to change that banner to something warm and tropical!

Well, I can completely identify. I’m not sure why anyone thought settling in upstate New York was a good idea either. The birds leave for a reason, people!!! I think “Hawaiian Mom” has a nice ring to it, myself 😉

Should I soon be saying Mele Kalikimaka to you?
Surely you must get tons of comments from people saying that the weather must be so cold and that they can never live there. I guess if you live there and have to deal with frigid temps, you can certainly pretend to be walking along some sandy beach in our cyber world.

Maybe “Wishing to be Hawaiian Mom” would work? I’m with you honey, sipping my hot tea! I have to venture out for my holy hour tonite, it’s only going to get worse, It’s already almost Dec though, only 5 more months of this!:) If we didn’t live in MN, why and where would we go on vacation?
Stina says
Although Hawaiian Mom does sound lovely, if it weren’t for your current name, I may never have found your blog. I lived in MN for almost 10 years, so reading your blog warms that special little place in my heart reserved for all things Minnesotan! And I’m definitely glad I found this blog!

Oh, my! Living in the warm climate of Texas, I can’t imagine. Our lows aren’t even as low as your high!

I’m with YOU, Lady! I get very “hunkered down” this time of year. Being “in the family way” makes it SO much worse because I can’t even enjoy the 1 or 2 things to ACTUALLY ENJOY about snow and cold…sliding and ice skating. Dang.
This is the first winter with the van, too. I am SO scared to drive on one, teeny, little snowflake with rear wheel drive…much less billions of them mixed with ICE! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, take me AWAYYYYYYY!
P.S. Nutmeg…please don’t blow those things our way! When the warm winds hit the cold, Northern fronts we just get more SNOW! Heehee!

I figure we have two options:
1. Take the “Freeze Your Buns” challenge, set the thermostat to 65 and get acclimated, or,
2. Set the thermostat to 83 so that when we get outside the cold actually feels good!
We are doing #1, but #2 works at my in-laws due to their wood stove!
