Pretty Happy Funny Real

The Sometimes-My-Teenaged-Son-Makes-Me-Cry Edition

Alternately Titled: Independence Day

{pretty}

My son rode his bike to WalMart yesterday and when he returned, he brought me a treat.

Pretty, no?

I admired it for approximately 3.5 minutes and then moved on to other senses.

{happy}

My son (and his brother) have been keeping us very busy this summer. For the first time ever, they are playing on the traveling baseball team rather than in-house.

This means multiple games on multiple nights.

Repeated, ad infinitum.

My Boys

Fortunately, I like baseball.

It’s as American, I find, as sea salt & chocolate.

(huh?)

{funny}

This is my 13-year-old son and his two-year-old little brother.

DSC_0001

Otherwise known as “my bookend boys.”

DSC_0003

They are both goofballs to the extreme.

DSC_0005

They get this from each other, mind you.

Not from me.

{real}

This is my teen-aged son on his way to WalMart.

DSC_0011

It’s a 8 mile trip–four miles there, four miles back–down busy roads and across numerous intersections.

What, me worry?

What, me fret?

(I do pretty well with the “Give Them Roots” thing.)

(The “Give Them Wings” part is not as easy.)

Have a blessed 4th of July weekend, everyone! See you sometime next week.

PS. Oh! I almost forgot to thank my sweet hostesses! Do visit Like Mother, Like Daughter to see all of the contributions to this week’s {Pretty Happy Funny Real}.

Then tell them hi for me. : )

    I'm with Michelle…I'm going to be looking for some of that sea salt and chocolate thang really soon! I loved the pictures of your "bookend boys!" SO CUTE…hopefully their similar personalities will keep them close.

    Love that chocolate! My sister just bought me a bunch of chocolate in Italy, and I am going to my closet (where it is hidden) to admire it several times a day. Love seeing your bookend boys-I have a pair as well.

    How lovely to get that chocolate! It will give you comfort while your tall and handsome boy is out adventuring in the world. Motherhood is bittersweet (just like chocolate!)

    I love the statue of Mary looking over your bookend boys. I think giving them wings must involve a lot of entrusting them, to her maternal care.

    I've not yet tried the sea salt and chocolate. I'm skeptical… then again it's CHOCOLATE.

    I LOVE that Lindt chocolate with sea salt. Delicious!!!

    And when I think of where I used to ride my bike when I was 13…not to mention younger than that…compared to what I let my own kids do–well, let's just say that I don't let them know where I used to ride my bike when I was 13!

    You ARE one brave mama. I am more on the conservative side letting my kiddos sprout wings.

    Driving through an intersection of my small town, I looked over at the young man on the tractor pulling some wagon thingamajig and he is also ONLY 13yrs old!!!

    There is like NO WAY I would let my 13yr old drive a tractor!

    He can mow and I am good with that.

    Going to WalMart myself tomorrow…will buy that chocolate for SURE!

    I also adore my bookends. Even though they are a boy and a girl, they look so much alike.

    Such a sweet, sweet gesture!

    Have you tried the chocolate with chili? It's actually very, very good!

    Seems letting go is a popular theme this week on {p,h,f,r}
    I posted a video of dd riding and how sometimes I watch her in that ring and think "Am I crazy?"

    I have TWO kids getting driver's permits next week and once they leave our subdivision they are on a 70mph road. I don't think I will ever know a non-anxious moment again.

    What is that quote from St. Francis?

    "The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will care for you tomorrow and every day.
    Either he will shield you from suffering or give you unfailing strength to bear it.
    Be at peace then and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginings."

    Great quote, K! (Must memorize that one.)

    Ha Christine — I have let my then-13 yo boy drive tractors with all the haying equipment in tow on the highways, long before I let him ride a bicycle along the highway!!

    I must get an updated photo of my bookend boys… (They're 23 years apart!) šŸ™‚

    Blessings for a wonderful Fourth of July weekend!

    8 miles?
    hmmmm…i agree with the motherhood-bittersweet-chocolate-comment…
    that's a long way.
    for a bookend boy to go.
    but give them wings we must…i say that with a sigh as i watch the clock for the newly licensed boy to return from the bank and drive-thru burger joint…
    gimme some of that chocolate!!!!
