Scenes from the Feast

September 9, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Minnesota Me, Special Events, The Faith 10 Comments

There are those who plan their feast day meals several days, if not weeks, in advance.

Feast VIII

And there are those who swing by the store on the way home from piano lessons.

Feast XII

Can you guess which camp my tent is in?

Look, does it matter if I decided, last minute, on meatloaf & salad & Duncan Hines chocolate molten lava cake?

Feast VII

Or does it matter that, ultimately and at the 11th hour, we had a special meal in honor of Our Lady?

You can get back to me on that.

The good news is, my husband is infinitely patient when it comes to these last minute celebrations. He was not, however, all that crazy about the “great” deal I got on the single-serving ice cream.

“Five for five dollars!” I chirped happily. And then, seeing his eyebrow shoot up into the light fixture, I realized that perhaps our ideas of a “bargain” do not mesh.

Feast VI

Angela sided with Mom on this one.

Feast V

And then, seeing that her sister had chosen a different flavor…

Feast IV

…thought she’d ask her “Taste for taste?”

You never know.

Chocolate might be as good as vanilla.

Feast III

Or not.

Anyway, in the end it will be the memories that matter.

Feast II

The memory that vanilla ice cream is still better than chocolate.

Feast I

And that it’s fun to celebrate a special feast.

We love you, Mary!

So are you committed (or doomed) to molten lava cakes for Mary's birthday in saecula saeculorum?

Fortunately our music lessons are in the morning, so I could swing by the grocery store and solve the feast day dinner puzzler early. I decided to make a dessert (because for my kids, desserts are really where the celebration begins) reflective of the time of year, so I bought some raspberries (with not any clear clue what I'd do with them). I ended up making something new – raspberry cake with whipped cream filling and topping (I saved some berries to smash with the whipped cream). My teenage daughter said it was "sooooo delectable." It would have been pushing the kitsch with my husband to sing "Happy Birthday" to the Mother of God, but he was perfectly happy (at my suggestion) to lead us all in a Litany to the BVM before cutting the cake. I think I may have hit on a new family tradition.

    Dear Margaret,
yes I been caught by surprise lately too. Some tha children keep me infrmed on if I forget, like their favourites but often lately I find myself 'thinking quick' to find some thing to do.
Interestingly yesterday I did my post on this too, mentioning my lack of organisation.

Needless to say what you did with your family will be remembered and that is the whole point isn't it?

Beautiful. Our celebration consisted of picking sunflowers from the garden, listening to my Mary playlist, and then picking up a chocolate cake at the grocery store. The main thing is not being perfect but creating memories. And it sound like both of our families will have god memories of Mother Mary's birthday.

I think it's lovely. And you know, four for five dollars is as good a price as we ever get on those individual Edy's ice creams here in my part of Michigan, so I think five for five dollars is actually quite good! šŸ™‚

(I mean, your husband is probably thinking that one big container is cheaper. And it is. But if your kids like different flavors…and/or you want easy portion control…it's hard to beat those Edy's cups. šŸ™‚

I've never done the single-serving ice cream cups because I'm generally horrified by the price, with a few exceptions to control my own portions from time to time, but you're right, there's something wonderfully festive about them!

Miraculously, and I do mean miraculously I actually PLANNED AHEAD for Mary's birthday. Shocking, I know. Dh missed the whole thing as he was at a business dinner.
We had wiener schnitzel (made with pork instead of veal), sweet and sour green beans, mashed potatoes, salad, bread and a three layer carrot cake. The little kids made birthday cards for Mary. The best:
"Fum Ben Tw Mary (From Ben, Too Mary)
    Happy Birthday
    I love you
    Your welcome for
    the rose's
    Love: Ben"
    šŸ˜€
Now if I can pull a birthday party together for Ben next week, which I haven't started planning or invited anyone too 8-0

Adorable kiddos! Priceless face Angela made at tasting the chocolate flavor. šŸ™‚ I think Blue Bell ice cream has a big sale going on this week, at least in my area — a half-gallon for under $4!
