I never really knew how addicted I was to my Magnificat magazine until 2 weeks ago, when I went to get the October’s edition out of the drawer where I always kept it and discovered—to my surprise and then my horror—that it wasn’t there.
You can imagine the mad scramble that took place over the next few days. To have this happen nigh on the feast of St. Therese, and the Guardian Angels and…oh, the DTs set in as I thought about it….Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was unbearable.
For seven long days I suffered. I pawed through the drawer repeatedly thinking perhaps I’d overlooked it. (This is the sign of a true addict. We repeatedly check and re-check the same area.) I prayed…poorly. I tried to think outside the box, which in this case was a smallish, rectangular paperback. Finally I made an act of the will, got past my angst and phoned the good sir at the Magnificat office.
“Um, hi, my name is Margaret…”
“Hi, Margaret!”
“And I, uh, never received this month’s magazine.”
“Are you certain?”
“Are you crazy? Of course I’m—I’m sorry. I beg your pardon. Yes, sir, I’m sure. I always keep it in the same drawer and I’m positive I never got October’s edition.”
“Well, sure, we’ll send you another copy. It’ll take 3 to 4 days to get there, though.”
Gulp.
“Thank you, Sir. Thank you very much.”
You may think this little scene is all in jest, but I really have come to rely on the assistance of Magnificat to complete my daily prayers. This is not a bad thing in itself but such codependence not always entirely practical. Life happens. Mistakes happen.
In the interim, then, I did what I knew I had to do, and I went to EWTN.com for their daily Mass readings. I pulled an old friend off the shelf and used that for my morning meditation.
(In the meanwhile, though, I waited.)
Postscript: As you can see from the photo above, the October edition arrived just yesterday and is now within safe reach of my shaking fingers. Thanks be to God for His blessings, big and small.

I want to be an addict like you! I have tried (not really, but I tell myself that) but just haven’t made it a part of my daily routine. Sad isn’t it!

I have to check this magazine out. I am addicted to just getting mail in general. So, if I were to get a really inspiring magazine in the mail it would be double the greatness!

I love the Magnificat, but haven’t been able to use it as well as you have. I’ve been working on it for two years now. Please pray for me.

I had a similar problem earlier this month. On the second or third of October I go to the campus bookstore and say, “Where are the Magnificats?”
The answer: “They sold out two weeks ago.”
I found myself wishing, rather oddly, that my college was not quite so Catholic.

Isn’t that the best picture EVER on the cover? I loved it when I got it this month.
