Saints and Scholars

The 2011 Edition

Saints & Scholars Theme 2011

(Those two are amazing!)

Here’s the thing.

I didn’t plan on doing Saints & Scholars this year—didn’t think I had the time to write all those speeches and assemble all those costumes and practice the children’s lines ad nauseum…

Saints & Scholars 2011
From left to right: St. Bridget of Sweden, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Josemaría Escrivá,
and Mrs. Penelope Smith and her son, Fredric

I didn’t think I had the time…but in the end, thanks be to God (as always) & Felicity (who, God bless her, pushed harder than all the other kids combined) & the last-minute sewing skills of my dear friend Cathie, (I love you, Cathie!) it all came together at the 11th hour and I am thankful and happy and oh-so-proud of my minions.

St. Bridget of Sweden
Praised be Jesus Christ! My name is Saint Bridget of Sweden.

This is not to say that the performances were, um, perfect. There were one or two lines that got forgotten—one or two gestures that went unmade. (“You forgot to beam at Father Escriva, Cate!” She sighed. “I know! I’m sorry, Mom.”)

Saints & Scholars I
Little George even had a line! It was “Hi.”

My beloved husband, also known as John the Sage, took me aside afterward and said, “Pookie? You gotta give them more time next year. Three days isn’t enough to learn their parts.”

Correction noted if not humbly received. (Hey, I’m working on that! Would it help if I told you my pride makes me cry?) Still, the children rose to the challenge. They really did, God bless their hearts, and what’s more and by far the best of all, they now have a set of new friends in heaven!

St. Teresa of Avila
Praised be Jesus Christ! My name is Saint Teresa of Avila.

And really, that’s the main reason we do it.

That and the public speaking skills.

That and the fact that they look cute on stage.

Saints & Scholars Ensemble
Our only desire: to be a saint!

St. Josemaria Escriva, pray for us! Ss. Teresa of Avila and Bridget of Sweden, pray for us!

That is too cute Margaret! Well done, I'd say even if you didn't have as much prep time as desired. Would've loved to see it in person. I bet all the kids did great!

Hi Margaret, your a good mom to take on this big task!! Your children will remember it and think about how you desired to instill the Catholic faith in them!

See, you are a great mom!!! Love you, too…we ended up NOT going to Wisconsin because my stepdad wasn't feeling up to company. I got more sewing done, though ;-).

From one Pookie to another: You did a great job, and their costumes are awesome!

First of all, I want to admit I get your older two boys mixed up. That being said. I thought neither of your older boys were homeschooled. Did that change?

(I didn't even ask if my daughter wanted to do Saints & Scholars. I became exhausted even thinking about it!)
