Now and Then

The Godparents Edition

We were in the great state of North Dakota this past weekend for my mother’s 87th birthday. In addition to spending precious time with grandmas & grandpas and aunties & uncles and not to mention all those fun cousins…

Cate got to see her much-loved godparents.

They live in Fargo and it had been too long for Cate’s liking since they had gotten together. A special trip to that city was in order, she thought.

I agreed.

Good godparents are a gift.

I was introduced to my friend Jan by our priest at the time, Father Courtright. (Do you know him? He’s an awesome priest.) He wanted me to give Jan some French lessons…and yet, when we got together at her home, over cup after cup of her delicious coffee, we spent far more time talking about spiritual matters than studying those French infinitives.

The lessons were forgotten but the friendship was forged.

Don’t you love how things work out sometimes?

Anyway, our lives are keeping us pretty busy these days—she’s the founder of Sacred Heart Productions and is writing a series of books on the whole of Sacred Scripture—so this makes me all the more thankful for those stolen moments.

Those cups of coffee…those cups of tea.

We take them when we can get them.

Are you close to your children’s godparents? Ours are scattered all over the globe but goodness, how we love them all.

Those pictures of little Cate are precious! We are blessed to still be close with all of our children's godparents, all of whom live in this area, except the newest ones.

We started out picking family for godparents, but then realized family will always be in our kid's lives, and we could choose friends so that we would always have that close connection. We love our kid's godparents so much, and feel we have given them all beautiful gifts!! Especially Maggie who has a priest and a sister for her godparents – cuz I think she's gonna need all the extra prayers when she becomes a teenager – oh my!

I still keep in ouch with my Godparents, who are my aunt and uncle. Our visits are few and far between these days, but they are still some of my favorite people in the world!

As for the kids' Godparents, actualy we just had Gianna's over for brunch with their family yesterday. Such a perfect choice for Miss Gianna. Jonah's are my hubby's brother and his wife who happen to also be our neighbors…again, perfect fit and he gets to see them A LOT. Lily's are a couple hours away, my brother and his wife. Don't get to see them near enough and really wish that we did.

Precious bonds between child and Godparents. I love them.

We see all but one set of our children's godparents at least once a year. The one that doesn't thought his were invisible 🙂 Seriously – I had to dig up a picture of them! He knows they are praying for him daily and he prays for them – just don't get to see each other very often.

We've chosen the same set of godparents for our kids. They're split between my siblings and my husbands sister and BIL. And oh yes, we see them ALL THE TIME. The lovely thing about the set up in location is that on their baptismal birthday we all get to celebrate together.

Now that we have one getting near to confirmation…it seems that we've chosen nicely. Her sponsor is her godmother. It's been a beautiful little journey together.

I've always wanted to take one of Jan's classes. What a wonderful example of living the faith for Cate.

We choose married couples for our kids' godparents and we keep in touch with all of them … even visiting each other's homes over the years. The godparents we choose are not relatives on purpose. Eric entered the church after our firstborn's baptism and my siblings were so young that we felt it better to chose a married couple that we both knew.
