I ♥ 5-Year-Olds

June 5, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Anecdotal, Minnesota Me 10 Comments

Speaking of Florence, my friend Tina just got back from a trip to Italy where she spent a glorious week and a half with her husband and daughters. We had the privilege of watching her three sons during part of that time, and I’ll tell you, they couldn’t have been better little men.

It was especially wonderful having another five-year-old in the house. 5-year-olds are candid and quirky and funny! So funny!

This is my friend’s 5-year-old.

Luke

He’s really funny.

One time he approached me as I swept the hallway. “I can’t walk without my feet,” he told me, peering down at them. “Or my legs. Because I can’t fly! That’s one reason.”

Another time he stood at the counter as I prepared a snack of mozzarella sticks. Silently he watched as I coated the string cheese with flour, egg, and bread crumbs. Then he asked if we could go for a bike ride after we ate and I said sure.

“You’re going to wash your hands first, right?” he remarked. “Because otherwise you’ll get your handlebars all dirty.”

Finally, my personal favorite. I had made barbequed ham and omelettes for supper one night. He shook his head at the plate as I served it, saying, “I don’t like barbeque sauce.”

And then he tucked in and ate it all.

“Well, how was it?” I asked when he’d finished.

“Too good,” he replied.

Eventually my friend and her family returned and–shoot the luck!–they came straightaway to pick up their boys. Now I’m back to being a mom of just six and am looking for new and fresh diversions.

Antonia

Don’t tell my husband but I think I’ve found one.

My husband would be livid if I posted a photo like that on the internet. But I'll tell you Margaret (and John) he still looks like a little man. No question. 🙂

My first reaction: Aw! Poor Baby Anthony!

My second reaction: Hey, I bet I could do that with Ben's hair!
(Though I doubt he'd sit still long enough.)

Love, love, love the hair 🙂 I've had to do my daughter's hair in similar ways (well, one or two tufts instead of three) since she was about 6 months old, because it got in her eyes so badly. She actually sits pretty patiently, probably because I've been doing "stuff" to her hair since she was born 😛 What a cutie Anthony is, though! I agree, definitely a little man even with the hair 🙂

Oh my. I think that may put baby anthony in therapy when he's older. 🙂

What a sweet little girl you have there. Her name is Antoinette you say?

Hey, I'm taking a trip (to the nut house) — can I send the kids over?

Precious little Antonia and I bet those little hair bands didn't decrease his testosterone level one itty bitty bit. I once smocked a pretty pink dress and put it on my beautiful, curly, blonde, one-year-old Secondborn and carried the pink confection from the bedroom to the den where my hubby promptly made me remove the offending item from his body…pooh.

The stories made me laugh. Kids are fun; blogging helps me remember that during the 'not so fun moments.' I like the photos … both of them.

The last two mornings, Louis has somehow ended up in Angelina's purple princess nightgown & been paraded around the house. He laughs as we laugh. Dress up is fun!
