Taste and See

September 12, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Anecdotal, Felicity, Minnesota Me, My Girls 9 Comments

My little Felicity is taking ballet lessons now and could there be anything cuter than a six-year-old ballerina? No, ma’am, there could not.

She is, in the words of Fancy Nancy, ecstatic about the idea.

So on Friday afternoon we stopped by the mall to pick up a pair of ballet slippers. (Even at Payless they cost 20 bucks! This will be an expensive sport, I can tell.) I had just the two littlest girls and Anthony with me and it was funny, really, to be approached by the older ladies who oohed and aahed over the baby and sent me off saying, “Good luck, Momma!”

If they only knew, they’d have bought me lunch.

Or at the very least, a coffee.

By the time we had walked the mall and got our shoes, I was good to go. It was a pleasant outing but I was spent, the result of keeping one constant, wary eye on my 4-year-old. This is Angela we’re talking about—my little blond brownie who moves through life at 70 mph (at a minimum).

Sure enough, on our way to the exit we passed a woman with samples. “Would you like to try some lotion?” she called, and I shook my head with a smile. You know the drill; just keep walking and they can’t get you to buy anything.

Angela, however, was plenty interested in this woman’s wares. She veered from her path beside me and made her way to the lady.

“No no, Angela!” I called out firmly.

Did she listen?

She did not.

Instead, she held out her hand for the woman’s plastic ramekin, stuck her finger inside, and gave that lotion a great big lick. Surprise! This was very different from the samples she gets at Sam’s Club.

The look on her face was (almost) worth her disobedience.

Ever yours on this adventure known as motherhood,

6 year olds are cute ballerinas, but 4 year old ballerinas in pink leotard, tights and shoes are absolutely adorable. And, I've got both so I know. 😉

Oh dear! Haha! This sounds like something I would have done at that age. I was always tasting things that weren't meant to be tasted 😉

Try Discount Dance Supply next time you buy shoes. Google it.

Hilarious! And yes, those young ballerinas are precious.

BTW, your local dancewear store should sell ballet slippers (Bloch or Capezio) for around $13. And ask your ballet company for coupons – they usually work together with the local gear shops.

Hilarious is right! I love that girl, so much spunk. But I'm very grateful that you are the one who gets to raise her. I'm too old.

I very much miss my 6yo ballerina who is now 16. Now she's into ballroom and hip hop…what a mix, eh? Savor these days, dear. I know I don't have to tell you, but I will anyway. Whatever you do, don't blink.

    Love you.
