The Many Voices of Meryl

August 8, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Current Affairs, Minnesota Me, Reviews 13 Comments

I love a good accent (seeing as I don’t have one) and will often

A. bother
B. embarrass
C. annoy
D. harangue

an out-of-towner who talks “funny”. It’s a little game I like to play. “Let me guess,” I’ll say to the lady with the British accent. “You’re from England, right?”

“Actually, New Zealand,” she’ll reply with a slight look of condescension. I’m forever embarrassing myself but still, can’t seem to stop it.

So here’s a fun video that showcases but a handful of Meryl Streep’s accents. I’ll bet she knows the difference between England and New Zealand.

Anyone plan on seeing Julie & Julia, by the way? Let me know if you do go, as I’m on the fence over that one. The cooking and characterizations fascinate me, though the language in the book was too strong for my liking.

A little too much cayenne, shall we say?

Happy Feast of St. Dominic, everyone! I’m off to the 3rd annual Minnesota Bloggers’ Tea today!

(speaking of regional non-accents)

AMDG,

Not planning on reading it, but would love to see the movie.
I think it will be a little like Forrest Gump…I COULD'T read that one because it was SO filthy…but the movie was ok for the adult crowd. I Love accents too!

I didn't read the book, but I saw the movie last night. It was delightful. There was one f-bomb and one reference to a specific male body part . . . but both of these lines were well done and hilarious. (Even my mother thought so, and she really walks the narrow path with these things.) I wouldn't take the little ones, though.

I think the film will be better than the book as I think the film brings in more Julia than the book. I read the book and it was very much doused in foulness.
Accents? Uh, yeah. Aussies on the lift yesterday – coming on from the pool . . . . they ignored me and chatted up my kids. Swoon. I know, it's pathetic, but I can't help it.

Oh, and I get the condescending look. When I was a teen working at a dry cleaners a gentleman came in to bring clothes. He had a charming accent, and I asked if he was from England and he replied, "God, no! I'm Scottish!" I said I was sorry and rambled a bit about wishing I was English etc., and then I said I was happy I was a bit Irish, to which he quipped, "WE all have our faults!" Hilarious, no?

Don't worry. I'm a New Zealander who has lived in New Zealand all my life and people here still ask me if I'm British 🙂

    Hey Margaret,

Go to thehappyhousewife.com for a fairly comprehensive review. She had the same concern – language was rough – but food and characterizations were outstanding. Love Amy "Enchanted" Adams and absolutely no one does an accent better than Meryl S. Maybe I'm sheltered, but I don't know anybody who "peppers" their speech like this so it is somewhat hard on the ears when you're not used to it.

I saw it with my grandma. I forgot about the language in the book and thankfully there's only one bomb in the film. It's the Julia part that's the best. She was just so…so her.

We saw it too… I never read the book, and now I don't think I will after hearing the comments about it.

The movie was a lovely movie to watch, and I am known to be quite sensitive to movies… but being pregnant as i am, I cried in quite a few parts.

Never heard of the book till the movie was out and didn't even have time to know about the language. I'm going to the movie because I haven't been in forever!

Dh and I saw the movie Sat night and thouroughly enjoyed it. It had a couple raw moments/jokes but all in all in was a wonderful film. Meryl was fabulous and Amy Adams was lovable as all get out. I was thrilled to enjoy a movie in a theater almost completely devoid of teens and their glowing phones as they text their way through a movie. Dh guesstimated the average age in the theater was 40.

I can't wait til J&J is out on DVD! Thoroughly enjoyed the book and am eager to see the movie.

Here's a present for your accent-loving self (which you may have seen before): an actress demonstrating 21 accents in 2 1/2 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UgpfSp2t6k

My adult daughter and I went to see the movie at a matinee yesterday. The theatre was packed which was surprising. Lots of laugh out loud moments, 3 instances of language and as the credits rolled the audience clapped. I highly recommend it! One audience member exclaimed she was so hungry after watching the movie. I heard another say they were having a *Julia* party at her home with all sorts of wonderful Julia inspired dishes.

Let's go together. Oh, I wish. I can hardly "do" Meryl Streep for her political views, but I would go with you, my friend.
