Our Adopted Seminarian

January 15, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Minnesota Me, Religious Life, The Faith 12 Comments

One of the happiest events this past Advent was getting to meet our adopted seminarian.

A Visit from Matthew

His name is Matthew, and we “adopted” him after being approached by a friend from church, who has put together this program to offer support & prayers to local seminarians. (We live very close to this seminary.)

What a hoot of an evening! Matthew met our kids and didn’t even flee the premises. In my opinion, this clearly shows that he has the mettle it takes to be a priest! He’s also down-to-earth, friendly, and very, very bright—all good qualities for the priesthood.

Oh, and he can speak Spanish like nobody’s business. Doesn’t look like he would, does he?

Will this young man one day be baptizing our grandchildren? Only time and God’s richest blessings will tell.

God bless our priests! God bless our seminarians!

I love fresh, new seminarians! And they seem to be getting better and better these days! St. Charles Borromeo pray for them.

For the past couple years, our RE director has handed out (or let the children choose) a card with a ‘strength in vocation’ prayer and a picture of a seminarian from our diocese pasted on it. Our family loves getting the cards, and the kids love to meet the seminarians and let them know prayers have been offered. It provides a special connection. And, like you mentioned, this could be their future priest!

LOL — this reminds me of our associate pastor (who is only 28) when he told us once that when he was a seminarian that he had to help with a VBS, only to find himself teaching a large group of preschoolers. I told him they just wanted to convince him that he never wanted to have children. 😉

I think that has to be one of the best pictures I’ve seen in quite awhile. Your kids faces are priceless, as well as the seminarians! He’s going to make a WONDERFUL priest. 🙂

Hi! I just found you this morning through Lerin’s blog. I am also a Minnesota Mom and was thrilled to find another MN mommy blogger I can follow. All the others I follow seem to be in warmer locations or at least not in MN! This post caught my eye since I think I know that seminarian. I’m pretty sure it’s Matthew C. and he’s from my diocese-St. Cloud and has worked in my hometown parish over the summer! Glad that you and your family have adopted him..great guy! Wonderful blog. I’ll keep watching!!
