Taking the Viking by the Horns

January 21, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesohta, Minnesota Me, My Girls 17 Comments

–Or, the Dilemma of being a Stubborn Little Girl

I had the kids make Vikings posters yesterday on account of a certain local football team. Have you ever tried to draw the Vikings logo? Yes, well, good luck with that! My kids, at least, went through several sheets of paper before they came up with an image they found acceptable.

I hovered nearby, offering assistance. I was, after all, the demon art teacher who came up with the assignment.

5-year-old Angela was complaining loudly that she couldn’t—couldn’t!—get the horns right.

“I can’t draw the horns!” she bellowed.

Felicity’s voice was gentle, understanding. “You need to ask Mom to help you.”

“No!” came the response.

You see why I call her my little blond Viking.

It’s the pressure, I tell you! We want—we need—our team to win.

Great fun, although my family is devout Roman Catholic so we'll be pulling for the Saints!

We don't really follow an NFL team, since we're in ACC territory and have college football to keep us busy and now we're on to basketball.

DH grew up in Baltimore, so some of his siblings are pretty bummed after the Ravens' loss, especially since DH and his oldest brother remember when the Colts left town in the middle of the night!

Ok, I wanted to comment on how I BLEED Green and Gold over here in WI. But, I can't. this is too cute.
I have a gentle voiced little lady, and a little lady who just can't ask for help as she must do everything on her own. it drives me nuts, because she gets it from me.
As frustrated as these little ones can be when God makes then like that – my prayer is she'll become a fighting mama bear, doing anything for her family and her God.

I won't get into my feelings for the Vikings… I grew up a half hour away from Green Bay.

And I no longer like Brett Favre, I think he's gone the way of attention seeking, not playing for the love of the game anymore.

But may the best team win. I don't really care one way or another. I don't follow football much anymore, now it's hockey.

Hi from New Orleans. The excitement is building. We are huge Saints fans, but obviously we know how to lose gracefully. I have followed your blog, and didn't even make the connection. Thanks for sharing your family. I have two boys and a girl. Although we don't homeschool, I still enjoy reading about other families who share similar interests.

    Hi Margaret:

Our last name is Favre-no relation-but people ask us all of the time if we are related to Brett. When our 4th son was born my husband insisted on naming him Brett so that he could say"yes, I am related to Brett Favre!!" Naturally I vetoed this idea. Anyway, we are from Louisiana so as much as we like Brett over here in the Favre household our final answer is "GO SAINTS!!" Blessings, Kelly in Texas

Margaret, we're definitely rooting for the Vikes in this household! My husband is particularly excited about the game … this type of season doesn't often happen to Viking fans.

Cute assingment, by the way. I think I'll just have the kids dress in their Viking apparel and not worry about drawing horns, though.

If you can't handle the Vikings game because it is too stressful, try some Cleveland Cavalier games. I am from Cleveland and they are amazing to watch. Last nights game had the whole city on the edge of their seats

We're going to take this opportunity to warm up for the Super Bowl with pizza in front of the TV.

This is pressure…I told Matthew that if he acted up this weekend, he wouldn't be able to watch the game. He informed me that such a punishment would violate his Eighth Amendment rights (cruel and unusual punishment.

I want the Saints to win. I have to say due to the fun I have had on Bourbon Street and we only have 6 in my family, but are devout Catholics. Go Saints. Go Big Daddy. So sad the Vikings lost. They were awesome tonight.
