In the quiet moments before dawn this morning, I was at my desk reading the book of Sirach. (Thank you, dear Jamie, for the recommendation!) Joe and Jem came padding over, having set their alarm for an ungodly hour so as to get their schoolwork done. Admirable? Certainly. But they also just want to be done for the day.
And was it such an ungodly hour after all?
“Hey, boys,” I said, “Listen to this. “ I read to them from Sirach Chapter 3, where the ancient author speaks of the rights of a mother over her sons and the glory that is gained by honoring one’s father.
It was right there on the page when they came over, honest!
The words were beautiful but dramatic. “Whoever forsakes his father is like a blasphemer,” I read, “And whoever angers his mother is cursed by the Lord.”
I paused to let this thought sink in, though it wasn’t long before Jem exclaimed, “Well, then, we’re cursed already!”
With blessings (not curses) to you and yours this day,
