Jennifer’s recent success guilted me into inspired me to jump back on the potty training bandwagon.
And then, with a little help from my stubborn daughter, I jumped right back off again.
Here is a section from this morning’s transcript:
Me (encouragingly): Do you want to go pee on the potty?
Camille (good-naturedly): Yeah. You have to have to change my poopie first.
And a few minutes later, as I was changing her:
Me (a touch impatiently): Why don’t you go poop on the potty?
Camille (sensing my impatience and responding in turn): ‘Cause I don’t
want to.
I give up. I am so not an early trainer…and evidently, neither are my kids.
I’ll have her trained by the time she’s five, I promise!

My second just potty trained in the last year, and he is five! Actually, he was 4 1/2 by the time he was trained. And he will still have an accident about once every other month purely because “I was busy!”.
*sigh* This is definitely the one and only part of motherhood that I could honestly do without!

I am totally not an early trainer either – partly lazy I suppose. 🙂 We have insisted they stop using diapers during the day on their 4th birthday (a few managed within six months before that) and that’s worked quite well! We also offer a special trip to buy a toy after they’re all the way out of diapers during the day.

I trained Clare (my 2 year old) in June, the hardest part is everywhere we go we have to go potty, every store, Mass, every porta potty we see, everywhere. which is not so easy holding a 1 year old and telling the other 2 not to touch anything! But it is better than the alternative. (not making it to the bathroom at all)
Best wishes! Ever tried just running out of diapers? It worked on one of my daycare boys. (I used to do daycare and the mother just did not bring anymore diapers…nice trick for her, huh?) It did work though.

Oh, I soo feel your pain! Right there with you, sista.

We don’t even THINK about potty training until 3 1/2! I just don’t have the patience to run after a child all day, making sure they make it to the potty on time.
Too much hassle for me. I’m just not that dedicated! *grin*
I wait until 3 1/2, and then do the cold turkey method. So far, it’s worked for us… but I still have two to go!

I showed this post and these comments to my husband yesterday just to prove to him that when I say, “If the Potty Train refuses to leave the station again, we are closing down the line until he is 4” I am not crazy and in excellent company.
Seriously, I kow my son can do it. He wakes up from his nap and most mornings with a dry diaper. His biggest problem is his fear (it was the same with my oldest son). And if he is like my oldest, that fear won’t go away as he gets older. So do I push him past the fear now or later?
Matilda says
That should be “know” not “kow”.
Sarah Jane says
As long as you send her off to college potty trained, it really doesn’t matter! Life is tooo short to count the months for potty training.

Hmmm…My girls were not early trainers, either. I’ve heard that boys take longer, but my 2yo son surprised me one morning this summer with: “No diaper. Anty pee potty.”
AND HE HAS!
