A Drought-Breaking Rain

August 19, 2007 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Gratitude, Keeping It Real, Minnesota Me 10 Comments

…is what they’re calling it.

I call it cabin fever.

Don’t get me wrong (and I know you don’t); I’m very happy for the farmers.

But this steady rain and high humidity is a deadly combo that is doing crazy things to both the produce in my refrigerator and my children’s ability to coexist.

Fuzzy strawberries…in the trash.

A pound of mushrooms…wasted.

Broccoli slaw (four dollars a pop)…slimy and unservable.

It kills me to be throwing all this stuff away! And now, given all the short tempers and the tattling of the past day and a half, I’m thinking I should’ve just kept it.

Anyone caught fighting gets the moldy plums as their dessert.

* * * * * * *

“Okay, okay, I’ll stop whining, teasing and fighting with my brother!
Can I please come back inside now?”

* * * * * * *

*Updated on Sunday evening to add: This post was written with a very light heart and with my tongue planted firmly in cheek. However, I have just seen on the news that there are flash floods in Southern Minnesota and that Winona county has declared a state of emergency.

Please keep them in your prayers.

    Our backyard does that, too. The hazzards of living in the Georgia swamp. 🙂 I never thought of using moldy produce as punishment, though. Thanks for the tip!

    I am so sorry! I know what that kind of cabin fever can do to a person. Hang in there and if I think of any fun distractions I will send them your way.

    We’ve got a different kind of cabin fever going on down here. (rain? I’ve heard of that before, but it’s been so long since I’ve actually SEEN any of it I don’t remember what it looks like! *grin*)

    It’s too hot (100+) and too buggy to go outside!

    I think using moldy produce as a punishment is hysterical… and my kids would stop just long enough to say, “wait Mommy… you’re just kidding, right?”

    Couldn’t they find some way to make it rain just on the farms? That would be convenient. All that rain seems somehow wasted in your backyard.

    We’ve been getting a lot of rain here to but we’ve enjoyed it.

    I will offer up prayers for those in Winona county!

    Oh, we are so tired of the rain. It does look like spring, though, with the green grass all around!
    Can I use your moldy fruit for my children too? They are driving me crazy too! Last night we played with a big ball in the basement and it seemed to help a little, we also jumped and sang songs on the mini trampoline. My husband is fishing in Canada this whole week, so it seems worse to be stuck here!! Maybe this is a great time to make some of your homemade play dough? 🙂

    My mom was happy I didn’t go into labor last night. She was truly worried that she wouldn’t make it through southern Minnesota with all that rain. I hear it’s also been a little chilly up there. We can’t quite imagine that feeling. It’s probably why your son requested Monster cookies for a nice fall treat!

    Was there a specific prayer you used to get the rain? We’ve been praying and rain dancing for months and I’m wondering if there’s a specific prayer we need to use. I live in TN, but my husband and I use to live in Mankato, MN. It has not rained here most of the summer. Because of the lack of water we have water shortages and everyone has been asked to conserve their water usage. We’ve never had to do that before. If we need to use the water outside to fill birdbaths, water new trees, etc., we need to do it between midnight and 5a.m. All I can say, is it’s very peaceful in the backyard between those hours. This morning the only sound I heard was an owl hooting. In a couple weeks we’ll be back in MN for a week. We’re looking forward to some cooler weather, rain puddles and if we’re really lucky we’ll hear the sound of a loon.
