Dads and Daughters

…and their thoughts on deer.

I can honestly say that my husband is one of the best influences in my daughters’ lives.

Dads & Daughters III

For all his obnoxious sarcasm when they just want a straight answer…for all his stubborn insistence that they play at least one sport…for all the ways that he pushes them to “stay the course” when it comes to, say, dropping out of school at the semester break…

He is forming some very strong young women.

* * *

I thought that being unemployed might bring him down. It did, too, for about a half a year, (him and me both!) and then suddenly he bounced back with a vengeance. He is calmer, happier, more at peace with life, and his working from home has been a great blessing to our family.

Are you kidding? He’s around to drive the girls to soccer.

* * *

Another good influence on my husband’s parenting was his reading Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. Meg Meeker. Have you heard that she’s the keynote at this year’s Minnesota Catholic Home Education Conference?! So excited to get to hear her.

* * *

Finally, at least in terms of this post’s “finally” and because some of you have asked, about Cate’s staying in school as opposed to coming home…

Deer Diorama I

We talked it over before the semester break and decided to stay the course until the end of the year. (Huh. Wonder whose influence that was.) Cate was able to buck up despite her being “cold & tired & hungry all the time.” She’s gotten good grades and has made some great friends.

Deer Diorama II

So we’ll see. We’re not ruling out bringing her home next year, ’cause the truth is…I do miss her.

I’ll leave you with these photos of Cate’s Deer Diorama and the descriptions that she and her father wrote. Cate made the mistake of leaving her document open on the computer, at which point her dad came along and had some fun.

The Roe Deer
(Capreolus Capreolus)
by Cate
In this diorama the deer are settling down for the night.
The mother, having led her baby to a stream, is standing guard
while the fawn curls up to sleep. Mother deer are naturally
very protective and, if they have to, will sometimes leave their
babies alone, hidden in the grass, for hours on end, until she
has gotten rid of the predator. Roe deer are herbivorous and eat
only leaves, grass, shoots, and berries.

Deer Diorama III

The Roe Deer
(Venisoneos Deliciousus)
by Cate’s Dad

In this diorama the deer are settling down to die after being shot.
The mother, having led her baby to a slaughter, struggles to stay up while the fawn simply drops. Mother deer are not as tender as their fawns and so may require some marination before cooking. Both mother and fawn taste exquisite braised in rosemary, diced in stew or chili where they provide a healthy, low-fat alternative to beef or smoked for hours on end until they have that smoky barbeque flavor even herbivores love to eat.
Cate so appreciated her father’s take on this mammal that she included his ending with her project. Some of the teachers were appreciative while others, I’m sure, were scandalized.
As the wife, I’ve gotten used to this.

    Ha, I love the deer paragraph. That's a beautiful diorama, too! I wish I could get dh to read the Strong Fathers book – I'll have to look for an audio version, because he'll do that! 🙂

    We sent 4 of our 5 to school this year (our 16yo stayed home). I think it was a very good decision for one of them, neutral for one, and the other two would rather be home next year. We have a lot to think about! Prayers for you and Cate on your decisions for next year!

    LOVE Meg Meeker! If you liked Strong Father, Strong Daughters you should also read Boys Should Be Boys and The 10 Habits of Happy Moms. All three are on my parenting must read list.

    That is hysterical. Had to show it to my husband, who is also a practical joker around here.
