Room(s) for Improvement

August 24, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Hearth & Home, Homeschooling, Minnesota Me 29 Comments

Subtitled: This is the floor that John built.

Home Improvement

This is John.

He’s my husband and I love him lots.

DSC_0077

This is the room that was our dining room before I filled it with books and set up shop.

(Maggie the Squatter.)

(That’s me.)

Because the carpet in this room was really gross (I mean REALLY gross) and because my husband loves me, he agreed to install a hardwood floor.

Which he did in a day while we were away.

Sitting Room Re-Do
Ta-Dah!

(This would be the “after” shot.)

As you can see, my messy desk has been removed to another room, where it is no less messy but just as loved. Also, I am trying to decide if I want to put all my books back on the shelves.

I rather like those clean, uncluttered lines.

Still thinking…

Handy Man Tim

This is Tim. He is the husband of my friend Lynn who helped John install the hardwood floor.

Thank you, Tim! Thank you, Lynn!

Classroom III

And finally, this is the room where I put all those books while my husband installed the hardwood floor.

AKA the classroom.

The room where I’m supposed to teach.

Classroom II

In addition to Maggie the Squatter, I am also known as Maggie of the Many Piles.

(Yes, I know I deserve this nickname.)

There are two things that you need to know–no, make that three:

1. We start school in two days.

2. I’m in denial. What, me ready?

3. I have my work cut out for me.

Trouble

Need I say more?

Nope. Didn’t think so.

Besides my friends in Texas (Jenn…Charlotte….) who, like, started school two weeks ago, who else is back-to-school this week?

I start homeschool AFTER the high school kids start and I only start a few new books at a time. So they can get used to the pattern of that subject.

Nice floor! And you husband is looking like he lost a lot of weight…did your diet plan work wonders??

I don't know how you homeschooling moms do it. I have nothing but admiration for you. My 2nd grader starts on Monday, and the rest go back the day after Labor Day…gotta love Catholic schools 🙂

Not me! I'm waiting until after Labor Day! But, I'll say a little prayer for you while I wait for my books to arrive in the mail (oops!).

Your floor looks wonderful! Kudos to your husband (and his friend =) Will you continue to use that room as your school room, or it will it now be your dining room?

Blessings to you and your family, as you begin your school year.

we were supposed to start today, but i am sort of dealing with your same issues…the piles. the being in denial. i keep waiting for some sort of miraculous turn around. maybe it will "come" after i deal with the piles. and if i buy new paper and pencils??? and if i quit bellyachin' about the whole thing and JUST DO IT!
    that floor looks GREAT!
    so shiny and new.
    so pretty.
but just wait till you have to sweep every day. wood floors are funny that way. and i only know because i have miles of them downstairs!
well, saying a little prayer for you. and all the mamas that have this ever so daunting task ahead of them…

NOT ME!!! I'm starting after Labor Day, isn't that the traditional day to start school? I tell myself that anyway.

My school room is in my entry way, as I'm planning on painting…saying painting because it's taken me 2 weeks just to get the stuff out of there and get the room taped to be painted.

I'm the pile mama too, always trying to eliminate those piles.

Your floor looks super, good job!!!

I am Marcie of the Many Piles and it drives my husband batty. So glad you're back blogging, I was missing my morning laugh. Here in Canada, the public schools don't go back until after labout day, so we usually start the day after school starts. Good thing, because I still have to order books!!!!

We're not starting until the 31st at the earliest –maybe not until after labor day even. We're enjoying the last bits of summer. (and I'm not ready)!

Sarah: In answer to your question, neither! That room will now be a reading room of sorts, and our classroom is the (currently) messy yellow room upstairs.

we are easing into it this week except for my 8th grader who is in a virtual school and started yesterday and my two high schoolers who are still putting the finishing touches on last year with the exception of dual credit classes that supposedly started yesterday (internet class that the professor hasn't started :P)

Love the floor. (Great job, John and friend!)
We always start after Labor Day, and I too am queen of the piles. We've also got all the school stuff in the dining room – drives hubby nutty! At least we get the table cleared for meals…..

Margaret, in a state where there were over 24 consecutive days of 100+ degree weather, all you can do is start two weeks ago.

We started then as well but only halfway (math and religion).

    It's a Texas thing.

What a guy! That floor looks great.

Nope, I am living in denial too. We start school on the 7th of September. And our "learning room" is a crazy mess.

I thought it was a great idea to revamp the room a bit. My 3yr old has demanded a space w/in the learning. Crazy idea to do so close to the start of the new year. OOHHH what a mess!

So, good luck to you. I shall pray for you're successful reordering of things. Please pray for me too…

I started with a few subjects last week. It is the whole thing this week, except for my 11th grader. He will fit in what he can in the mornings before going to work as lifeguard at Bunker Beach.

Love those empty bookshelves! I would be totally happy leaving them that way and then closing the door on the pile 🙂 But alas, I live with normal people and ours are overflowing.

We start next week…maybe….I'm in denial too. We are in the middle of some seriously major outdoor projects that take time and cause a mess indoors.

The floor is gorgeous. Kudos to your husband! I'm trying not to be horribly, achingly jealous. We've got to live with our icky carpet at least another couple of years before we're going to be able to replace it with the wood I long for. Sigh.

Oh and baby George… cutest baby ever. I wish we could get him and Ben together, I think they'd be best buddies. (Cuz I know you and I wouldn't run out of things to talk about.)

But if it's a reading room, do put some books back on the shelves. Empty shelves? Just silly :)In my house, anyway LOL

School begins after Labor Day for us, although we are "south" enough that the public schools have already started. I'm not ready either!

I didn't say that I love your floors last time either – I am absolutely sorry for not! I LOVE your floors! I can't wait to have my own home (even though the Navy has us in nice quarters this time) so I can have wood floors, too. So, I'm drooling in HI.

Not us! Pretty much in the same state you are except that I'm using my oldest daughter who won't be starting college till after Labor Day as my excuse. You know, no sense in us starting school while she is just sitting there staring at us!

George is about like mine. Although mine won't stand still long enough because he knows he's in trouble. 🙂 And, alone in a diaper, not a chance. Mine would be without!

Questions: where did you get your bookshelves? I like them. And what about the bench in the school room? I like that too (and the bookshelves in there as well!). Thanks!

Your husband is a handy saint and so is his pal and that floor looks beautiful.

We have not started school yet.

I am sorta-kinda-almost ready. Unless I start painting the kitchen, which I've been wanting to do all summer. 🙂
