Doing One’s Duty to God and Country

July 14, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Growing Up, Minnesota Me, My Boys 10 Comments

Here’s the thing.

Scrapes

The brothers are away, see—both of them. The brothers are away at Scout camp for the entire week, and my mom misses them like crazy.

Going home to see her family in North Dakota helped…a bit.

Taking me and my sisters to the pool while there? Another nice distraction, yeah, though I know she felt “incomplete” as a family and that her thoughts kept wandering to how her sons were doing.

They’re far, far away from her, you see. They’re in Wisconsin, for cryin’ out loud!

The fact is that she needed me to be the tough guy. She needed me to take that spill on the pavement and to show her that—even though the big boys are away for seven days—she still has me to pick up the slack.

(Or in this case, to scrape against it.)

Precious! I didn't know you had scouts, too. My two went to Georgia this year for camp. I read your blog, and it's like picking up a note from a long-time friend. Don't miss them too much! Hope little brother doesn't take up too much slack!

Good job taking one for the team George, you're such a big boy. I hope you and mama can make it through the week without the boys. They'll be home before you know it!

    Poor kiddo!

John Paul is away at scout camp for the first time EVER! and I'm afraid I'm missing him something terrible also. He's up north, though, not in Wisconsin. It would have been good for my nerves to know your oldest would have looked out for him a little bit.

I'm sending a letter today though and was thinking this will be my last letter because he'll be home soon. That thought helped a lot.

Awww, he's just working on his tough guy image! 😉

Enjoy the time the boys are away (no guilt!) and spend a few extra minutes praying for them.

Boy do I remember the days of missing the boys while they were at scout camp….. now I just miss them til they get to come home to visit – which, fortunately for me, will be this weekend… Yay!

George, you're one tough cookie – and just think of the story you'll get to tell your big brothers!
