About a week before Lent began, I wrote a post about Lenten penances. What do you plan to do? I asked my readers, and received a variety of responses.
One email arrived from a friend in Nebraska. Patsy said that she and her family were going to put a large “X” over the dishwasher. Their penance—shared collectively—would be one of abstinence from that appliance.
I thought about her suggestion for about 20 seconds.
And then I thought, “Nah.”
Well, guess what? God in His capricious goodness decided to override that decision. Our dishwasher broke days later.
Pushing the “Smart Wash” feature (my personal favorite) resulted in…nothing. Pushing the “Normal Wash” button? Nada. (And then nada nada, when in my disbelief I kept pushing it.)
The obvious solution—the “Clear and Drain” feature—caused the machine to hum encouragingly for a few minutes and then…
Nothing.
[Annoyingly, the only thing that did work on my once-trustworthy Kenmore was the green “clean” light, which kept blinking at me smugly the entire time.]
And so it has gone for the past three weeks. My boys have done mountains of dishes and my draining rack (and countertops) have been all but buried as a result.
“You told us to wash the dishes,” Joe and Jem said in their defense. They were right. I learned to change my directive to wash and dry the dishes.
This morning my husband had had enough. He went online to research the problem—he knows how to research, that lawyer husband of mine—and found the following:
To clear the error code, hit heated dry then normal wash, heated dry-normal wash. All lights will light up, hit cancel, should be good to go.
27 little words.
27 little, wonderful words…
…that have us all singing with joy. Hey, it’s almost Sunday, right? We’ll find another new penance on Monday.
