I.e. What this #StreamTeam family has been watching on Netflix, even though it’s Lent and we should be screen-free.
“Keeping It Real” Disclosure: I’m a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam which means that they pay for our streaming service in exchange for these monthly reviews. All opinions, however, are my own.
The truth: In a perfect world and better family, we would have spent our Lent playing board games by candlelight. I’ve always wanted to do that, you know? Go electricity-free after sundown for Lent and really hunker down in Spirit during this penitential season.
The even harder truth: We’re not even close to being that family. We need our screen time because we need to stay sane.
Plus it’s the least we can do to check out new shows, because the good folks at Netflix have asked that I do so, and they send my kids toys to bribe encourage them.
Cool toys, according to my 6-year-old son.
Toys that are meant to prompt viewings of LEGO Bionicle: The Journey to One.
(“Keeping It Real” Disclosure Number II: My kids prefer LEGO: Legends of Chima. They really really like Legends of Chima.)
As for John and me, we prefer shows that are a little less animated and have a bit more grit…
…and as big big fans of Breaking Bad, we devoured Better Call Saul.
Please PLEASE get Season II, Netflix!
(Not that we’re, like, desperate or anything.)
How about you, dear online friend? What are your kids watching on Netflix these days? What are you devouring?

We don’t have cable, Mags, but we are watching Season 2 of Better Call Saul via Sling TV. We can watch it on AMC on demand the day after it airs. Season 2 is just as compelling. 🙂

Karen, you are AWESOME.

I’ve been enjoying more films than usual lately, partly because the kids work late hours sometimes, and I like to wait up for them, but also because slowing down and enjoying the little things is part of what I felt called to this Lent. 🙂 But we don’t have netflix; we use Amazon prime, and the selection between the two is quite different. We got a Roku stick for streaming, and there are lots of other free channels to watch that way, too.

Please stop worrying about what you should be doing. It’s the road to unhappiness. God gives us all away to live our lives and not one is the same as the other. He gave you your family to raise and you are doing the job he had planned for you. Do not try to stress yourself or your family by not stressing that there always should be more. Please look for contentment in what is. You have a beautiful family and husband and you are a wonderful dedicated mother. There are seasons in life and some are easier than others. Keep the Lord with you always but feel the contentment in what you are able to do and how your family is comfortably raised.

I read this comment at the end of a long hard day, and it really helped to receive it. Thank you, Diane! Yes, there are seasons, and this is not the easiest one. God is so good! He’s got this; He’s got us. ♥

I just devoured the second season of Happy Valley (don’t let the name fool you). And then I watched it again to catch the bits I missed the first time. Not very Lenten for sure, but I’ve had Lent up to my eyeballs this year.
