To be a Saint

November 4, 2014 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Going Home, Homeschooling, Minnesota Me, Special Events, Spiritual Growth, The Faith 3 Comments

Today’s post has two parts. Theme Part the First: How Easy it is to be a Saint; and Theme Part the Second: How very Hard!

.: Part I :.

Dressing up as one’s favorite saint is easy…

St. Cecilia, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, and St. Michael the Archangel.

…and we love participating in our homeschool co-op’s annual Saints and Scholars for that reason. Sure, it takes a bit of effort to write and memorize their speech, but once it’s done…

They have made a Best Friend Forever up in heaven!

And we really need those friends up in heaven, because…

.: Part II :.

Being a saint down here can be very hard.

We snuck in a trip home to North Dakota on Saturday, and getting up early after Friday’s night’s festivities was very hard!  It was hard, but it was worth it. We got to see some of our very favorite people.

The reason for sneaking in a special trip was a very special birthday.

Can you read the card that’s attached to the flowers? Of course you can’t. It’s a cell phone photo.

Please allow me to assist you.

Yep. It was my dear, sweet momma’s 90th (!) birthday, and she was her usual sweet, shy and very  QUIET self.  That was hard! “Are you in there, Mamà?” I wanted to say. “Are you having a nice time on your birthday?” You don’t know where she’s at (at all) but what you do know is that you love her so much.

You love her and you will miss her, very much.

It’s saying goodbye to this world that’s the hardest of all. You need great faith and you need to let go, and this is a detachment that only the saints can teach me.

    (((hugs))) Maggie!! Beautiful post.

Admit it, you wanted to name this post, "Lord, Make Me a Saint" didn't you? 🙂

    Love to you…

Our homeschool group used to do an All Saints party but hasn't the last couple years. I could take over, but am doing other things within the group…a youth event in a graveyard Saturday for example…(then onto our home for pizza and outside games)

My point? We don't have an All Saints event anymore.

Dressing up as saints is really so much fun, isn't it?

And happy birthday to your mom. I can appreciate the depths of your sorrow. God bless!

Margaret, yes, being a saint down here is very hard isn't it. The idea is great but that suffering is just so darned hard. Happy Birthday to your Mom – will say prayers for her health today. I don't regret one time going home those years that my Dad was sick. My kids learned so much from being with their Grandpa even though he said very little. Oh, and I love, love that picture of your Dad and sister.
