Vol. XXXI for Me
The “Thou shalt not fret” Edition
So…not to be all negative or anything, but the bombs & blasts of this past week have me teetering on the brink of wigging out.
Not really the best option, right?
Better to pray. Better to parent. Better to blog. Better to…
Bake! Yesterday I decided that the very best medicine for all the world’s uncertainty was to (brace yourself) call off school. BAM! Just like that it was done: the teacher declared an unschooly day. (Except…can you really “declare” an unschooly day? Doesn’t it just, like, sort of happen?) And then I decided that an even better medicine for all the world’s uncertainty was a batch of homemade toaster pastries, made from a recipe in this book (my new favorite cookbook, by the way!) which was a gift from a not-as-new but even more favorite friend.
(Follow all that?)
The fact is, when all else fails, I bake bake BAKE…and if you don’t believe me, just ask my buns.
Or, in this morning’s case…
…my muffins.
(My son was like, “Really, Mom?” He has no patience whatsoever for blogging muffins.)
Also yesterday…while the homemade pop-tarts were in the oven…I sent a bunch of Easter pix to my mom & dad. Correction: I ordered the photos through Flickr and had them printed out at the local Walmart. They were done in an hour! My dad, always eager to have an errand to run, (seriously), was more than happy to pick them up and pay the $1.56 charge.
This is my new favorite thing, I think! I order the photos online and am thus freed from the burden, hassle & guilt of [never] mailing my parents photos.
Go me. : P
And justlikethat they got to “see” Baby Francis.
Speaking of babies…
This is my niece and her darling family.
We got to hang out on Easter Sunday, which meant—this is familiar to many, I’m sure—nursing our babies in the back bedroom. (This is one of the novelties of my advanced maternal age. I’m nursing my baby alongside my sister’s grandson.)
Anyway, my niece’s little boy started making all these yummy noises. “Mmyum! Mmyum! Mmyum!” he smacked loudly, and my niece & I burst out laughing.
“Is Mommy a good cook?” she asked him.
In closing and apropos of nearly nothing…
Except maybe Armageddon…
This is the view from my front step this morning:
Isn’t it lovely? Isn’t it picturesque? Isn’t it, like, the third week in April?!
That’s it.
I’m changing my blog name to Florida Mom.
The Quick Takes are at Grace’s this week! I hope that mine made you smile just a bit, and that you will join me in praying for all these very special intentions: the people of Boston, the people in West, Texas, and Jen & her new baby Joseph.

I wuz him, too. And I have never even kissed his wittle cheeks. Or wittle toes. Sigh.
Happy Friday. I feel like taking off the rest of the year.

That's what we did today. I baked a loaf of bread and a batch of currant scones. Then we had scones for lunch.
Just can't do school when there's a manhunt in Boston and everything is shut down

I do the same thing for photos with my parents, they love it. I'm not a big fan of that particular store, but it is one big advantage to their presence in my quite small hometown. I'm pretty sure Mom and Dad prefer it to mailing them photos because they run into at least 5 or 10 people they know on every Walmart trip and love the chance to brag a little.

I looked at that book recently. Now I will have to, ahem, mention that Mother's Day is coming…

Any chance you'll come to my house and bake me some muffins?
It's WARM here and I have lots of good coffee.

Didn't you get the memo on thenew liturgical calendar? We're in the 50 days of Christmas, so there has to be snow.
A bit crazy! We had at least 18" of new snow. I do love winter, but it can go away now. Maybe we'll be shoveled out in time for the conference.
Jennifer says
So glad you are enjoying the book! Aren't those toaster pastries so good?
Rosie says
Snow! I don't know what I would do… Now that our tulips are in bloom and the trees finally have leaves, I'm an infinitely happier person! But you'll have the last laugh come July when we're dying in 90% humidity with temps in the 90s all day 🙂
Tracy says
Except that we will also be dying with 90% humidity and temps in the 90s! MN is not spared of extreme weather!

I wuz those toesies and those chubs for legs!!! (not yours, the babes) (just teasing you know that right?)
I baked today too…peanut butter cookies.
We accidentally took off today, by the time we shoveled out and had a doctor appt and then Sam's Club and cookies to bake, Oh, yeah, oops, I forgot school!!! (it's Friday, it's a easy day anyway) The "regular" school kids had off too because of the snow…

How is he 4 months already??
And man…that snow is relentless!
Jen says
He is SO adorable. Wow. Has it already been that long?? I felt like you just had him…like last week. 🙂 I really want to make those pop tarts. Perhaps a chore for my 12 year old. And BOO to snow. My husband would flip out…lol
