After the Fact

February 6, 2012 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Cultural Commentary, Current Affairs, Minnesota Me, Sports Stuff 14 Comments

So here’s the thing. I wanted to watch the game & the commercials, but that was downstairs and the (food and the) feminine fellowship was upstairs.

In the kitchen.

With the food.

As I’ve said.

We’re talking chili & potato skins & wings & guacamole & these little bits of sausage-y goodness that were deftly prepared by my friend Ruth Ann. I called them “Wonton Yummies” and ate 42.

Oh, and do NOT get me started on those Special K cookies.

Okay, get me started.

They were perfection.

Okay?

Because we decided to hang out in the kitchen—that would be, my girlfriends and me—I was required to watch the ads today, especially the ones that I heard were good.

Like this one:

(especially when the baby smacks his hands on the glass)

And this one:

(especially the look on the mother’s face)

And this one:

(the bit on the boat made me laugh out loud)

(as did the alien cadaver)

And finally this one:

(it’s an ad about Doritos and it has a baby)

Oh, and we did all assemble for the halftime show—“we” as in all the grown-ups and me. We shooed the kids out because Madonna? Um…

It turned out to be not that bad after all.

Almost family friendly, even.*

And it had a marching band.

How about you? Did you watch? Favorite moments?

*Also? I’ve just read that there was an inappropriate hand gesture made by one of the singers. None of us noticed it but apparently it was there. My bad for recommending the halftime entertainment…but what can I say? I’m extremely fond of marching bands.

I know one of the main guys behind the genius of Sling Baby. He was my directing prof. @JPCatholic.

We are Patriots fans so we watched the game. However, at half time we switched to Animal Planet so the kids could watch the Puppy Bowl. Too cute!

We enjoyed the game, very glad the Giants won 🙂

I found most of the ads to be really awful, actually, and stuck to usual "turn your heads!" with the kids. There were so many that were offensive. Ah well. I tend to be Highly Sensative to such things! 🙂

Older kids watched the game. Dad and younger crowd watched Cars 2. ME? I walked around with a miserable 2 month old with a cold trying not to interupt others. So, I am pretty happy about seeing the ads here. That's my favorite part of the super bowl 🙂

I did the see sling baby commercial. That was awesome!

Today, when I was in Target with my 6yo girl, I realized that I didn't even know who won the game. Still didn't until I read Ellie's comment. I was much more into "Downton Abbey" than the SuperBowl!

I did watch the half-time entertainment, but wondered when I'd be shocked. Madonna was ok. I completely missed the inappropriate action as did our guests (we invited another family out for the evening). I would have chosen the commercials you chose if I had to pick, but there were a few that I just didn't get … probably because I was talking and missed the first couple lines of dialogue. But, I have a feeling they were dense anyway. Honestly, if we hadn't had friends out, I probably wouldn't have watched much of the game.

I watched most of it with the men in our house. We were a subdued crowd. I was disgusted by so many of the commercials — so hard to keep switching to keep the kids from seeing the previews and the GoDaddy stuff. The latter infuriate me.

Thought the half-time show was done very well, when considering it could've gone waaaay the other way!!

Liked many of the commercials: John Stamos Dannon Greek yogurt, Doritos' Slingshot Baby, Ferris Bueller Honda CRV and Evolution of Football, to name a few.

We usually watch the Superbowl for the commercials, but were blessed with a great game this year, too!

I only watched part of it with my 3 young boys (who don't have an interest in pro football, neither do my husband or I) – the first half hour at most. When the M&M commercial came on, I figured we'd be safe. And then it turned awful (I know it's animated, but the innuendo and associated music were too much). I watched the halftime show too, but didn't see the offending gesture either. I've read about it and it just seems like a sad grab for attention. I suppose she (M.I.A.) felt she wouldn't be remembered for her performance, but would certainly be remembered for her vulgarity. Distasteful.

For the most part, while my husband was out for a recruiting dinner, I read more of my current book – The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks 🙂

My hubby and I didn't watch any of it…we were at my parents' house for the afternoon, and they didn't watch it either! Guess we're weird. 🙂 My siblings (who were at a friend's house for the day) did watch it though…cheered for the Patriots I believe.

I did not watch a bit (well, except for about 15 seconds of Madonna in which I thought — you are too old for this, lady) and I did catch the Dorito ad. I was cookin', lady!

We just had our family, so we really didn't have much of a party. The kids aren't really interested yet, which is good, because there were some icky commercials mixed in with the funny ones. The GoDaddy ones and that KIA commercial come to mind. I did love that sling baby Doritos one – so funny! We did not watch the halftime show, we were afraid of what Madonna would do. We weren't really rooting for either team, so my husband was glad it got pretty exciting at the end. I think I need to come to your super bowl party next year! Sound like fun! And yummy!

Watched the half-time show with my kids plus another teen. They were shocked to learn that Madonna is OLDER than ME, but more than a decade, and that the song "Like a Prayer" came out when I was barely older than they are (I was 18). When I suggested dyeing my hair, getting extensions, wearing tons of makeup and short skirts and strutting on stage, my kids promised me they preferred mom to be like mom. I also did not notice any obscene gestures and was relived that the show was, on the whole, tame.

Like Michelle, my three at-home kids were absolutely STUNNED to learn that Madonna is older than their Daddy and I (by just a year or two… but it still counts….)!! 🙂
