The 10th Day of Christmas

January 3, 2012 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Living Liturgically, Minnesota Me, Special Events 5 Comments

Are you still celebrating?☺

We are, and it’s wonderful, but I have to admit that tomorrow’s “Weigh-In Wednesday” is hanging over my head like a fudge-covered anvil. More on that later, though, because today we are making…

These!

We have never, ever made gingerbread houses as a family. (The house that Cate’s assembling in the post below is from a kit that she received for Christmas.) I have always wanted to, because the whole process looks like a ton of fun and, well, it’s what we over-ambitious and highly-competitive homeschooling moms do, right?

(My husband tells me I need to dial back on this.)

(I agree.)

In fact, one of the reasons that we’ve never done gingerbread houses before is that I’ve always let my perfectionism get in the way. This is a big problem for a homeschooling mom, especially a mom who spends too much time on the internet, because inevitably she (read: me) compares herself unfairly to what the other moms have done (and there are, like, hundreds of moms in our Catholic/homeschooling/blogging-mom circle) and she throws in the towel before she even starts.

That’s when I turn to Fly Lady.

I take a baby-step.

I just…begin.

* * * * *

More on this never-ending saga later! Will the sides of our houses even stay together?! They may not…there’s risk of failure…and if they don’t…

We’ll make gingerbread trifle.

Have a blessed and happy 10th Day of Christmas!!! And for a great article about the meaning behind the 12 Days of Christmas, click here.

    Oh!!! I cannot wait to see how these turn out. We have such horrible luck with the Gingerbread houses…. I think it is really a patience issue for me 🙂

    I hot-glue gunned my graham crackers together….not too perfect. BUT it was do-able in my crazy world.

    Those will look so yummy! Looking forward to the weigh-in…better you then me. I gained this Christmas.

    Happy 10th day of Christmas!

    If the sides don't stick the first time, just add more frosting!!! Looks like a ton of fun… happy eating.

    I know exactly how you feel, so many "perfect" mamas out there!! We didn't even put out baby Jesus in our manger set, til 2 days ago…guess we have our own baby Jesus this year!

    Anyway, just do it, the kiddos don't care about how it turns out, they just care about the "doing it".

    Even if it's only a little thing. They will still have fun.

    Okay, here are two things that keep me from killing anyone when we make gingerbread houses:

    1. A gingerbread house cookie cutter set. I DO NOT LIKE the paper/pattern method. {{Shudder.}}

    2. Parchment paper. Cut the pieces right on the parchment paper and move the whole thing to the cookie sheet. No more wavy walls.

    Oh, wait, there's a third thing — no perfectionism allowed. It's candy and frosting flair that interests the kids. They don't really care how wonky the things look. 🙂

    Christine, I love that you hot-glued! You must come over for coffee. 🙂
