Freaky Fursday

September 22, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Homeschooling, Minnesota Me, Motherhood, My Girls 6 Comments

Often the girls and I will linger over breakfast while I read them a story from this book. We had read Devotional Stories for Little Folks a few years back but I’ll tell ya, it’s a decidedly different experience with an (almost) all-girl audience.

If you know what I mean.

Today we read about their new little girl Rebecca, who was adopted from foster care at the age of three and is having a rough time adjusting to life in their family. She’s being a stinker, is what it is, and in the story “Not THAT Sister” throws several good-sized temper tantrums.

We’d finished the story and were clearing the dishes when Angela said, “Mom? What’s that bad word that begins with ‘F’?”

Quick as a flash, I turned to her. “What’s that?” I stammered, stalling for time.

“Oh yeah! Freaky! Rebecca is going through her Freaky Frees!”

My heart rate slowly returned to normal as I realized what my 6-year-old was thinking. The “freaky frees” are like the terrible two’s, only in this case the speaker has a…lisp.

Which, when you think about it, is much better than the alternative.

We are reading those stories right now, too. And I think that right now that prayer/story time is the best part of our homeschool day!

Sarah, I lean heavily on those quiet homeschooling moments because…at the end of the day…it's not WHAT you accomplished but rather, HOW.

We LOVE that book. We read one of the stories every Wednesday morning. Your story made me laugh so hard I had to share it with my family!
