The Penderwicks at Point Mouette: A (Rave) Review

June 8, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesota Me, Reviews 20 Comments

The Penderwicks at Point Mouette is one of THE best summertime kids’ novels EVER!

(Not to speak in the extreme or anything.)

My only concern is that I’ve almost finished reading it. Only four chapters left, and then what?!! I will be left bereft and longing for yet another chapter in these lives I’ve grown to love so much.

To speak in the character of Rosalind: “Oh well. There’s always the laundry to do, a letter to write, and the little ones to look after.”

And as Skye: “Big deal. It’s just a book, for crying out loud, and besides, I’d rather be reading about black holes.”

As Jane: “My heart is breaking. I can’t say goodbye. Not now. Not like this. I have so much more I want to say to them.”

And finally, Batty: “I’m going to go play with George now.”

I will post an update to this post once I’ve—HUGE SIGH—finished the last chapter. Meanwhile feel free to chime in below. Have you read it? Did you not just LOVE?

Okay, that is IT. I'm stealing my copy back from my daughters today. Bunch of rotten little book thieves I'm raising. Hmph.

(And btw, they totally agree with you about the book.)

(Another btw: did I tell you this already? The editor of The Penderwicks is now *my* editor too. She's the one I'm writing my current novel for. Makes me so very happy.) 🙂

I'm torn about letting my kids read this book, Lissa. Does that seem like a contradiction? It's not; I want to read it OUT LOUD to them to see their reactions as the drama unfolds.

And oh my goodness, the drama. It really is really wonderful. Really.

I've just added it to our reading list, which keeps growing and growing! Thanks for the recommendation, Margaret!

Oh, and about that final btw, Lissa:

Sharing an editor with Jeanne Birdsall is VERY cool, as is her sharing an editor with YOU.

We have the other two Penderwick novels and have recently enjoyed them, but this one isn't in our library yet. 🙂

Read it! LOVED IT! Passed it along to the kids. They devoured it. Has to purchase the entire set because otherwise our library might have to come hunt us down for them. Since your girls are younger than mine, I would probably do it as a read aloud. I think you all would enjoy it. Mine wanted to read it on their own and gobbled them up. BTW… the teenager read it too and liked it, he's just too cool to rave about it.

    Lissa,
The trick is… don't let them know you have it until you are done! Very cool about the editor in common. How exciting!

Sarah, make sure you start at the beginning with the first book in the series:
The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy.

We're listening to that one in the van right now. It's a start-of-summer tradition!

OK, that's it, We've got to order those books!!

    Forget the library.

I wrote it down I think when Charlotte did a review on them?

    Can't wait to see!

So glad to see your review!! I just bought this for my eldest since she loved the other two, and she read it in a day and a half. That should have been my first clue to pick the book up myself :).

I saw Charlotte's recommendation of this series and requested the first one at our library. Guess what I just picked up this week! I can't wait to read it to the kids.

    Read it. Loved it.

Am waiting to be able to share it with my girls. I think a couple of years yet before they're really old enough.

We JUST got them in the mail from Amazon yesterday!!!!! So excited to read them! I might have to fight off my daughter, though…. Charlotte, she got to the package before me so I couldn't hide it from her. 😉

It wasn't at my library, but I just checked again and they finally have it! All the copies all over the county are "being catalogued". So now I'm on the list!

Yay for everyone who's getting to read these books for the first time! The characters are wonderful.

    They speak LATIN, even. 😛

Just picked up the first two on CD from the library. For the next four weeks we will be transporting a pre-high schooler to prep classes every day and these are way better than Barbie DVDs (sheepishly admitting to possession of a DVD player in the van and Barbie DVDs). Reserving the one you reviewed from the library. Thanks for the great reminder, friend.

After having Amazon suggest the books as something I might like, I had been wanting to read a recommendation from someone I trust…and now I have it! Going to order them for oldest daughter's b-day this month. Thanks Margaret and all!! – Kelli

I'm starting a trend in getting the majority of our books from the recommendations of ladies like Lissa, Charlotte and you Margaret.

So I'm off to the library's online request page to "request" the first Penderwicks book.

    Thanks!
