I can tell that it’s First Communion time because lots of people are coming to my blog via an Internet search for:
- First Communion Novenas;
- A Letter to My Daughter on her First Communion Day; and
- Common Loons in Minnesota
(Okay, so that last one is an anomaly, I’m sure.)
I am more than happy to share the letters that I wrote to Cate and Felicity with you. Here they are:
in her typically chipper little way, “Well, it broke my heart!”
Now I just need to get the original letters into my daughters’ scrapbooks!
(To that end, I gave Cate her scrapbook this past weekend. “You have more time than I do,” I told her. “Will you put your First Communion scrapbook together?”)
(It’s only been two years.)
I am also more than happy to share the First Communion novena that we do at our church. It’s a bit more geared toward little girls, being flowery and all, but you can certainly focus on the daily virtues with your sons and have them dutifully crank out the drawings.
(That’s what I did with Jem four years ago.)
(Though granted, your son may be more of a James Audubon than mine.)
Here’s the link to the First Communion novena: “A Garden fit for My King”
A Very Special First for Felicity
It doesn’t have a title page so you should make one of your own with a picture of your child or a holy card or a drawing, etc. along with the date of his/her first holy communion.
Also, it’s in Google document format which is new for me. Can you let me know if the link works for you? Thanks!

I am completely charmed and tickled by Cate's response to your letter. What a card! 🙂
Both letters are just beautiful — true keepsakes (whether or not you can find the time to scrapbook them). Thanks for sharing!

What beautiful letters you wrote your girls! That is something I hope they treasure forever. 🙂 Both links worked for me. I loved the novena idea!

Anna is praying a very similar novena this week, as she prepares for Saturday. It has the sweetest prayers in it, all with flowers tied to them. Perfect for little girls!

When you posted the novena for Felicity last year, it touched my heart so much. One of the things I miss very much in the Evangelical church is the lack of preparation and respect that traditions like this bring. It's one of the reasons I love the Easter season, because it gives us the opportunity to really reflect, which often gets lost.
All that to say, thank you for sharing. It touched my heart and helped me know how to communicate the preciousness of God's gifts to my son. 🙂
Blessings!

I meant to come back here and let you know I still haven't done an album for Katherine, it's been over a year now. (she doesn't let me forget it though)
I really liked doing that novena with her last year and can't wait to do it with my next daughter next year!

Hello Margaret,
Happy Mother's Day! I hope your day is relaxing and restful. Hopefully the clouds are just up here–it's raining here. I got the download to work for the Communion Novena. Don't know what I did, but now it works.
Blessings,
Cheri
