Tell me.
Do you make time for art on a weekly basis?
I thought I did. I really did.
(Me being the former Art major and all.)
And then, as I was setting out the supplies on Wednesday—the paper, the brushes, the tubes of watercolor paint—Cate burst onto the scene and exclaimed with passion, “Oh! We haven’t done art for a long, long time!”
It’s just one of those subjects, I guess.
One that’s…um…messy?
It’s certainly that.
One that requires substantial prep. and considerable clean-up?
Yep. I have to admit it’s certainly that.
One that makes all the difference when we do include it?
You know the answer as well as I do.
Note: This scarecrow project came from Kathy at Art Projects for Kids. I love her website!
Updated to Add: Jamie requested a photo of the finished work. I aim to please, Jamie! Here you are: Jem’s Scarecrow; Cate’s Scarecrow; Felicity’s Scarecrow; Angela’s Scarecrow.

Ok, so where are the finished products? Us visual learners need to see those!!
I love her site too, she's on my google reader. (among many others)
We DO do art. But you know that.
A woman in my book club just offered to homeschool students an art classes for the month of November (how did she know we'd need some inspiration in Nov?) so starting next week, the 2 oldest will be gone on Tues and Thurs for a watercolor class and drawing class for 2 hours!! (I'm excited for it can you tell?)
I love things that get my boy interested, he is not as into art as the girls.
(but he is into music)
Mess? yes, it's messy, but so worth it, isn't it? I love the time it takes for them to be creative, a whole hour can go by so quickly doing art.

I love your scarecrow pics! Kathy has an awesome site, doesn't she? We use her ideas a LOT!
Art is on the schedule 3 days per week. Sometimes it bleeds over into more, but at least 3 days. Plus dd draws in her nature notebook at least 3 times per week and does a history drawing weekly. I'm really happy about the amount of art going on this year and so is JBug. Who knew planning ahead could be such a useful trick? LOL!

Love her site also. I saw these scarecrows the other day and thought they were so cute. We may just have to try these. Love your pictures.

I added the links to the finished work, Jamie! You owe me. 🙂

Alright!!! I loved the finished products, just beautiful!!!
Hmmmmm….what do I owe you? Just don't be too tough on me–OK?
Thanks so much!

This is probably the main reason I DO NOT homeschool. We would just do art. Nothing else. Math is so boring…one big yawn. I leave that to those weird people who lub math.

You are so right! I was thinking this same thing yesterday when I was watching all my kids do their ATC swap cards. I felt so guilty that we don't do it more.

Ah, maybe the *paints* don't come out every day but as the very happy recipient of at least a dozen crayoned masterpieces by your daughters, I can attest to the omnipresence of art in your home! 🙂 🙂 🙂
I used to feel like painting was a big hassle to set up, but a couple of years ago I tried keeping all our watercolor supplies assembled in a bag the kids could access without my help. We use dry-erase markerboards to paint on—they make great drying boards, too (and you can use toy blocks to stack them in a tower to save space while drying paintings).
GORGEOUS paintings there, my dear! I think you must have the cheerfulest walls in all the land!

Oh man, this is why I send my kids to preschool 😉

No. That's the short and truthful answer! But, my kids love it when I finally do get my act together and pull of an art project. I have this website/blog on my reader, too. There'll be more time when it's not soooo very nice outside, right??

Fun fun fun, Mags!! Love the art work, and why didn't I know you were an art major???? Hmm, well, we are really doing pretty well here with biweekly art, or at the least once a month, but yeah, the mess-shmessh!! Love the creativity, don't like the mess, but it's only for a short time that they can be messy and have fun, so it's worth it 🙂 *boompoti* was my word verify, think this is telling me or you something??? 😉

How funny! It thought that scarecrow looked familar. We just finished Kathy's art project of the watercolor fall tree.
Art around here is the constant doodling completed by my son as he tries to grind through division.
The younger girls do seem to get a lot of "art" done. I'm surprised by their "masterpieces" glued to my walls on a daily basis…aaarrgh.
