Proof that We are not (quite) Poor

December 4, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Hearth & Home, Minnesota Me 6 Comments

It’s cold up here in Minnesota—only 20 degrees when last I checked.

Consequently I just hauled my big poofy winter coat up from the basement. No more getting by on sweaters for me! I tried it on as the girls oohed and aahed, then slid my hands into the pockets. I found my black leather gloves that had gone missing and I also found…

…a big wad of cash.

I was quite pleased, certainly, though at the same time I was cringing at my fiscal irresponsibility.

“Here,” I said, thrusting the money at my son Jem. “You wanna count this for me?”

He did indeed. What 10-year-old boy wouldn’t?

“$16.13,” he announced when he’d finished, then asked, “Can we use it to get a treat at Felicity’s ballet class today?”

There are several vending machines in the building where Felicity has her lessons. Her brothers and sisters feel a sense of entitlement to the candy & chips, given that they’re forced to wait there while she dances.

It’s only fair, they reason.

But I’m not fair.

“No,” I told Jem, as he looked at me beseechingly. “You shouldn’t expect to get this money.”

“Why not?” he responded. “It’s extra.”

I can’t really argue with that, now can I? And the thing is, the kid knows it.

All for the greater glory of God,

It is frigid out there, isn't it? I've got 17 degrees for my 'high' for the day today. I think we'll only be dropping from here. *blah*

The 'extra' money that we rarely come across is nice. Like, when I switch to a different purse and realize for some reason that there still is $10 in there. I'm virtually RICH!

Enjoy your chilly weekend. Looks like we'll have the poofy coats here to stay, unfortunately.

I love kid logic! My Peter would have said the same thing!

One of the reasons I love winter–finding money in my coat pockets!

(I think this is my first comment)

We did the same thing last night. We pulled out the box from the attic and went through them. We found a whole container of carmex, an almost whole pack of gum and lost car keys…for a car we don't own any longer!

I was really hoping to find a $20.

Great minds think alike, I also got out my warm winter leather coat (purchased 3 years ago in the summer at Goodwill 🙂 and in the pocket I found $1.50 in quarters. I try to keep a little loose change in my pocket for the street people who ask for change.

I love it when I find money in my pockets. I might not want candy from a vending machine, but I am with Jem on the treat idea. I think I would head the van right over to Starbuck's for a latte. Hmm. . .I'm gonna go check my pockets, that latte sounds awfully good right about now.
