Welcomed to the (Spiritual) World

July 7, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Gratitude, Minnesota Me, New Baby, Special Events, Spiritual Growth, The Faith 27 Comments

“Once you were all darkness. Now, in the Lord, you are all light.”

(Ephesians 5:8)

So we were at a 4th of July party on the day before Anthony’s baptism and I was complaining good-naturedly to a friend at the buffet table. “What was I thinking, scheduling a baptism for the day after the 4th? I’m going crazy with all this planning!”

Elizabeth is one of the Religious Education teachers at our parish—a beautiful, joyful, faithful gal. She laughed in response to my tongue-in-cheek grumbling and said, “Get him wet! That’s all that matters.”

“Everything else,” she smiled, “Is extra.”

Elizabeth was right, of course, and we have the beautiful baby Christian to prove it.

Baptism III

Anthony is a new creation! (And I’m one tired mom.)

Here he is at that definitive moment, being held by his godmother Ruth Ann.

Baptism IV

I love how the startled little hand went up.

Baptism XVI

“Hey,” he’s thinking. “Where’d all that sin go?”

Baptism XVII

The gown Anthony’s wearing was hand-sewn by his godmother, by the way.

Baptism XX

I want to be her when I grow up.

Remember me and my friend Cathie? If you step in a little closer you can hear what we are saying:

Baptism VII

“Okay, we got ‘em baptized. Let’s sneak out the back and go for coffee.”

(Alas, our mean husbands wouldn’t let us.)

Here’s a close-up of the stars of the show, Anthony and Ellie.

Baptism XI

Anthony appears to be greatly inspired by his reception of the sacrament. “Go, therefore,” he is intoning, “and baptize all nations…”

Ellie, on the other hand, is just saying, “Aargh.”

(It’s a grumpy little girl thing. I know it well.)

Baptism X

See how Angela’s little foot is poised and ready in this photo? It’s almost as if she’s about to…oh, I don’t know…run out to the van and step on a cake or something.

Baptism IX

What can you do? Angela does nothing in half measures, and that includes stepping over and/or on any boxed goods in her way.

Baptism XVIII

She’s awfully cute, though, and for that reason we choose to keep her.

(Grandma Cathy is glad to hear it.)

Baptism VIII

Because really, it all goes back to what Elizabeth said. “Get him wet. Get him baptized.”

Baptism XV

Everything else is extra.
“This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church.
We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

so gorgeous! I feel like I shared the day with you.
And I grew up in one of those crazy, stepping on cake in the big van type families, and in the end, it's all worth it.
    thanks for sharing!

Beautiful day! Yes, get that baby wet. The pomp and parties are unnecessary (fun, but unnecessary). I am continually amazed at the numbers of babies who receive this blessed Sacrament so late because "we had to get Uncle Bob and Aunt Jane here, or we have to schedule the caterer." Bah! Just Baptize the baby.

When I was born, babies were Baptized so early the mothers didn't even go to the church. That's what the Godparents did. They took the baby to the church and they had him Baptized. No pomp, no party, just a blessed Sacrament. I think we should get back to that.

    Those are great, great pictures!
When I was Angela's age I used to swipe icing off the sides of the cake. So I ruined a fair amount of cakes in my day. 🙂

Why am I a little weepy reading this? Because its been 7 months since I baptized my last baby? Because I so love that sweet smell of the oil on their little head I don't wash them for days after? Because I always feel a little memory of my own baptism day? Because I am so grateful to know that there are other moms who value their child's baptism as I do? Bless you and all your littles!

What a happy day! Anthony is so beautiful. And I love his "commentary". His gown is gorgeous – he has a very talented godmother! And his mother is looking quite slim so soon after his birth!
