The Kitchen Counter: Buried
The Kitchen Island: Sinking Fast
The Kitchen Table: A Mess of Muffins and Playdoh (Let’s hope those girls don’t get confused.)
Marilyn wrote a post about how she felt like Sisyphus most days, and I thought I’d share these photos in empathy. There is never an end to mess around here. It’s part of the…joy of my vocation.
Today, after we’d gotten the kitchen cleaned up, I went upstairs for a much-needed nap. (Ya think?)
“Do be quiet,” I told the children. “I’m making a baby, you know.”
Apparently the dog didn’t get the memo, for twenty minutes later I was startled awake by her husky a-roo! roo! roo! “Sorry, Mom,” Jem apologized from my doorway. “She saw a couple of people walking by.”
Bleary-eyed I made my way back down the stairs and prepared a cup of half-caff. I poured the water into my Melita filter and returned to find a pool of coffee underneath the mug.
Well, obviously.
I’d had the coffee mug upside down.
All for the greater glory of God,

God bless you Margaret for publishing real photos! I must say, you could have taken the exact ones at my house!! ANd it makes me nuts and is a constant source of my tripping and falling and losing the JOY of my vocation. Tough trick there. But you seem to manage w/ ever so much more grace than most, certainly more than I can muster. An inspiration. Bless you! M

Must be one of those days. I poured my coffee into an upside down mug this morning LOL. That was fun!

Oh, my, yes, plenty of those days around here! (And here it is the floors — all of the floors — which get covered in craft projects, books, trains and blocks, and who knows whatall).
Suzie says
Yes, Margaret, you do make me laugh. I should have had this post to read yesterday, though. And you wonder why I only have close-ups of food on my blog!! Good thing its the ‘just prepared’ food on a plate and not the meal leftover under the table on the floor that I choose to post.

LOL! You poor thing! We have more than our share of days like that around here. I’ve gotten the coffee pot ready a few times lately, then wondered why, twenty or so minutes later, there was nothing in the pot. Forgot to turn it on…ugh!

Thanks for sharing your real life.. makes me feel much more normal and alot less alone:)

The coffee bootstrap problem.
Sometimes it takes coffee to make coffee, y’know?
Nancy says
Well, at least you’re trying to get some rest! By the way, I have one of those dogs too…only she’s more of a “yap, yap, yap”.
Jamie says
Hey!! When did you sneak in and take pictures at my house?
We all have those kind of days.
I keep wondering what kind of muffins and thinking how ambitious you were to make them? They look great!
minnesotamom says
Those are double chip pumpkin muffins, Jamie. I have the recipe posted on my cooking blog.
I hadn’t made them in awhile, I guess, because some of my kids gobbled down four in a row before I caught them!
They are good.
lynxymama says
from one pregnant mom to the next, you have MUFFINS on that counter, that is SUCCESS SUCCESS SUCCESS!!

The constant messes – I will admit – were getting me down lately. I completely overhauled the play room, got rid of lots of stuff, and decided the children could only have their toys in the play room or their rooms. (this doesn’t include art stuff which is always done at the kitchen table). So far so good. But like all “great plans” I’m sure it will last about a week until chaos rules again…

Dear Margaret
My kitchen looks like this every day and I have an 18 and 15 year old girls! But I love them because they make the muffins.
Cheers – Joolz

Ha – my husband still teases me about pouring cereal into a water glass when I was pregnant. Well, we all know that the ditziness is all for a good cause!
Cmerie says
Hang in there! It’ll pass and tomorrow will be better. You’re right when you said the “joy of your vocation”. 🙂
I’ve been having that kind of week so far and am looking forward to a more relaxed day today. Now if I can just get the children to cooperate…

Keely thought it looked like a lot of fun at your house. She is wishing she was there and she also wants to know why you left the window open so that snow is coming in your kitchen.
