Leafy, Green & Mean

January 12, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Food and Drink, Hearth & Home, Marriage, Minnesota Me 17 Comments

I whipped up a batch of homemade spaghetti sauce yesterday while the guys watched the game and the little girls did their thing. I opened a can of spinach, (thinking I might sneak in a bit of green), and then changed my mind. Canned spinach is so much stronger than fresh or even frozen that I knew my family would mutiny.

I left the open can on the counter while I finished the dinner prep and then dashed out the door to see a movie—this movie—with my girlfriends. (Yes, I liked it so much that I had to see it again.)

Now, my husband is not always that…gifted when it comes to putting leftovers away. As such I was happy to see that not only did he refrigerate that can of unused spinach…

…he labeled it as well.

Ha! Good to see dh has a great sense of humor.

Also good to see that someone else liked that CCOBB as much as I did. I went to see it with friends first and come out as the only one liking it. Now I’m trying to finagle some time with hubby to go see it again.

    Peace, Miss Margaret.

I’ll take it fresh, but from a tin? I’m all in with your husbands sentiments (er, wisdom).

Yes, it doesn’t look as appealing from the can. Very creative labeling, too!

Popeye must have a pretty strong stomach! I love spinach fresh and will even do frozen. But I can’t even connect those with canned spinach.
Now that can is poison AND trash!

Hilarious!!!!! I LOVE spinach…fresh, frozen, canned, raw, cooked….I say put it in the spaghetta gravy…and the lasagna, and the salad….;)))))))

In fact, one of the best dishes in the whole wide world is spinach bread….take a French bread – cut it in half lenghtwise – put both halves on a baking sheet and set aside. In a stovetop sauce pan – heat one-half stick of butter, a box of frozen spinach and a bit of Velvetta cheese – add salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. Heat this mixture till spinach thawed and mixture is creamy and spinachy! YUM! Slather on both tops of the cut French bread – sprinkle with Parmesan cheeese and bake at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes – my family goes Popeye over this!!! 🙂

Cheryl, that bread sounds really good. I can’t say I care for the canned spinach, however, and don’t know why I even bought it. Must have been on the shopping list for one of those crazy diets I was on! 😉

    ROFL!!
I love spinach. If I’d been labeling it, I’d probably have done a Popeye the Sailor Man graphic 🙂

I eat a daily breakfast of a cup of frozen spinach with 2 eggs or whites made into an omelette. BUT….. There is no way in H E double hockey stick I would EVER eat that gross canned spinach.
