We watched this movie as a family last night and it was fabulous! Truly, it was so captivating that my husband (the perennial twitch) even joined us from the dining room, where he had been reading an equally captivating Cabella’s catalogue.
And he stayed put!
Abigail Breslin is radiant as Nim, Gerard Butler is as cute as always, (ahem), and Jodie Foster is…well, she’s Jodie Foster. I could watch that woman paint her toenails and still I’d be entertained. She’s just that good an actress. Her character in this movie is a “borderline agoraphobic” and she plays it to the goofy hilt.
Oh, and let’s not forget Fred the Lizard and Selkie the Seal. My children loved them even more the people, which, given their scene-stealing antics, is understandable.
Grab the popcorn and get this movie.

I wondered about this movie. It looked really cute! It is based on a book, did you guys read it before watching? I am just asking because I am wondering if we should read the book and then see the movie or if it doesn’t matter. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been looking for a good movie for family movie night. I just put it in my netflix queue!
Nim is by far our favorite movie this year!! Yeah1
I came upon your site via a friend and I have to tell you I’m hooked. Wonderful writing!! I will certainly be back. Peace and Blessings.
We watched it last weekend and loved it too!
I love Jodie Foster too, all her movies she’s great!
Oh! Goodie! I just added it to my Netflix list! Were you the one that recommended Penelope too? Oh my goodness, I LOVED that movie. I didn’t want to return it!
Thank you for posting about the good movies, it is hard to find good honest reviews by real people!
God bless!
This was our movie for “movie night” last Friday, and it was a big hit over here, too!
It was a hit here too! We loved Gerard Butler in the movie “Dear Frankie.”
We thought this was a fun adventure, too. We went to Spiderwick expecting to like it and didn’t; then we went to Nim’s Island expecting nothing, and really liked it.
WE really loved that movie too. It proves that a family movie can be made and be entertaining without the extras that some insist on putting it (for the adult viewers).
We watched this as our first day of school treat and loved it. Very good!
Hi Margaret,
We liked this movie, too!
