Toddler Math

Today’s Lesson: Teaching Fractions

  1. Give your two-year-old a square piece of cheese. Watch as she neatly folds it–in half, and then in fourths, and then in eighths–and then neatly places it all down the front of her diaper.
  2. Give her a piece of canadian bacon. Watch as she chews it carefully into–goodness, maybe 1/100th bits?–and then promptly spits them out, “pleh!”, onto an open copy of Highlights magazine.

Like Danielle has recently noted, sometimes our job’s just done for us!

(But most times, the clean-up is all ours.)

You can use her diaper move to teach percentages … “What percent went down the diaper? That’s right! 100%”

My 2 year old this morning, while I was on the computer reading this blog (among others) thinking she was eating her cereal, had the milk neatly “painted” all over the floor and the bowl was placed in the middle of the painting. This was our “Art” for the day.
