1-2-3 Patience: A Connect-the-Dot Kind of Day

November 3, 2006 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Humor, Minnesota Me, Spiritual Growth 15 Comments

1. Begin at breakfast with the distribution of chewable vitamins. Stand patiently—palm extended—while your 3- and 5-year-olds make their very…slow…and…deliberate…selections.

2. Move on to the laundry room, where you discover that the entire basket of clean, unmatched socks has been tossed down the chute with the dirty socks, towels & underwear. Patiently sniff & sort & weed out the clean socks and bring them back upstairs.

3. Your toddler comes to you in need of changing. You proceed to remove the soiled diaper and wrap it up tightly, at which point your toddler asks to please see its contents. Patiently you unwrap the diaper and show her, only to see her eyes light up in wonder at what she’s produced.

And so it goes throughout our connect-the-dot day. 101 ways to be patient by the end of it; 101 opportunities to grow in holiness.

Should we choose to take them! 🙂

Ed. Note: I will be fasting from this blog for a few days. Here are some links that I greatly enjoyed this past week, in case you missed them the first time around:

* Suzanne’s awesome Saints Activity
* Dawn’s “Candy Math & Pumpkin Science
* Alicia’s clever and edifying Rosary for Priests
*And finally, (but have your tissues ready), Alice’s beautiful “Dance in the Rain” and Diane’s equally lovely “Love Story”

Have a blessed weekend!

    Only 101 ways to be patient? It must not be afternoon yet.

    I think my days are always 1-2-3 days, I have done each of those and had to laugh out loud with the sock one!! I will even run down to the basement to find one pair of clean underwear that was “accidentally” thrown down! My 2 year old loves to see her daily “productions” too. Thanks for the laugh and the patience reminder, like Suzanne, I too think each moment is a patience reminder, only to hopefully make us saints, if we choose! God Bless you Margaret!
    PS My 2 year old loves to distribute vitamins, this helps on the choosiness. (is that a word?)

    You are more patient than I. This mean mommy gave up on the vitamin distribution opera a while ago and now says, “you get what you get.”

    Thanks for linking to me, dear friend. I’m touched. Enjoy your time off.

    I just had to say that one of my prayers at Mass yesterday was for more patience (in addition to praying for those who have passed). Funny how you seem to be thinking the same things I am. Although, I will admit I may not have undone a diaper to show the contents. You’re definately ahead of me there. And as I sit typing this and watching my children blow bubbles into their milks through straws and getting the milk on the table, floor, and themselves, I find myself repeating that wonderful song…Have patience, have patience, don’t be in such a hurry. When you get impatient, you only start to worry. Remember, remember that God is patient too and remember all the times when others have to wait for you!
    Love you!

    Jenn up North: can you tell us where we might find the music to that song? I love it.

    Maggie, don’t you remember me singing this to you over and over again as we rowed in the rain after a tiring but wonderful trip to the boundary waters? I honestly don’t know where the tune can be found, but I can sing it to you!

    Maggie, I just googled this and found the song! I had the Music Machine record (remember those?) when I was a kid and that’s where I learned the song.

    Oh, I am so glad I am not the only one being asked to see the contents of diapers….and actually obliging the little one’s desires!

    Thanks for helping me see how I am cultivating the virtue of patience…something I severely lack!

    Blessings…

    Patience–the most important and elusive of all the virtues! Thanks for the reminder that we grow in holiness as we grow in patience.

    Thanks also for including me in the round up! You are too kind!
