Summer Fun, Schedules, and Heart-Stopping Shrieks

July 8, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Just Me, Minnesota Me, Motherhood 3 Comments

Alternatedly Titled: Which is worse?

Some—and I repeat—some of our summer obligations are winding to a close. Felicity had her last soccer game of the season on Wednesday…and then I went home, went online and signed her up for the fall session.

Crazy, much?

Cate wraps up the season this weekend with a tournament—no fall session for her, she didn’t ask and I didn’t push—and then it will just be baseball for the boys and a handful of piano lessons.

In other words, summer bliss.

Which is worse? Subjecting one’s children to their brother’s pyrotechnics,
or repeatedly taking pictures of the peeling paint on one’s front steps?

Yet—and yet—it is not always their choice that I leave their schedule open, as I discovered yesterday in the grocery store parking lot.

(We were making yet another trip to pick up milk and fresh produce.)

(I feel European, I go to the grocer’s so much!)

(“Bonjour, Monsieur.”)

(“Bonjour, Madame! ‘ere again for more fromage?”)

(“Oui!”)

Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, in the parking lot at the grocer’s, where I was scanning an email (because that’s what I do) from a friend that I haven’t seen in awhile. She’s been very busy, her message explained, doing crafts at Princess Camp for ballet, and chatting with her sisters in the evening.

I was smiling to read my sweet friend’s voice when suddenly…

“I missed Princess Camp?!!”

This was Angela reading over my shoulder. This was Angela, shaving a year off of my life.

Which is worse?

Ah, yes. I was just having this conversation with my 12 yr. old daughter after the soccer signup reminder for the Fall season just came in the mail. *sigh* It's all about balance isn't it? Btw, I love the girls' red, white, and blue outfits. 🙂
