George Stories

March 4, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesota Me, Motherhood, Toddler George 5 Comments

Subtitled: Got a toddler?

George is almost-two going on 42—42 because that’s the age of Columbus when he discovered America and George is also a great explorer.*

George I

Explorer George. That has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Except when the land he’s exploring is under the kitchen sink and/or behind the toilet and/or in my makeup drawer.

Mascara wands are meant for waving and tubes of lipstick are best uncapped. This is the worldview according to George and as far as he’s concerned, if it’s in this house it’s his for the taking…and breaking…and dumping…and clicking.

George II

Hey, I’m a toddler! he says. It’s what we do.

He puts those big brown eyes to good use, too, and can pretty much sweet-talk his momma into anything he wants. (“Sweet-talk” being a relative term, as George is all guy and his vocabulary consists of nods, grunts and finger points.)

Apple: Tree

Son: Husband

(In my husband’s defense, he is actually a great conversationalist. He just chooses the best words while his wife chooses…all of them.)

Two quick stories in keeping with the title of this post and then I’ll let you get on with the rest of your day. George spotted some paper and markers at the table (Markers + toddlers = This Mother’s Greatest Fear) and crawled up on the chair to create Great Art.

“He’s making a masterpiece!” said I, the proud mom.

“He’s making a mess-terpiece,” said his sister, the art critic.

One more story and then I’m done. The kids were each given a pack of gummies and of course Toddler George wanted his fair share. Seizing the moment to “Teach Him His Colors” I held out my hands and asked, “Would you like the red or would you like the blue?”

George looked at one gummie and then the other…and he reached out his hands and grabbed them both.

The world is my toddler’s oyster, I tell you!

Or at the very least, it’s his gummie.

*Actually, Columbus was 41, but “almost-two going on 41” didn’t rhyme. So sue me! My husband’s a lawyer and I’ll sue you right back.

Not really, though. I like you.

This exact scene has been repeated in our home numerous times. This past week, my hubby couldn't use the wifi on his phone cuz Louis had clicked away to some unknown setting! Took Eric half the day to figure it out. I try not to leave my electronics where they can be reached … almost lost my kindle ('only' the lighted cover was ruined), so lesson learned on my part.

However, the little are adorable when they imitate using all our gadgets!

What a sweat age. I have a 2 year old myself. I love it because we start to learn so much about them – but 2 also makes me sad as well. They turn from baby into little ones this year. Have fun exploring, little guy!
