Scenes from the Feast

February 7, 2011 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Family Fun, Minnesota Me, Sports Stuff 16 Comments

Subtitled: I ate, drank, and made merry…and now this morning I must diet.

So tell me. Did you watch the game?

Superbowl XLV VII

And if you did, ate you Doritos?

That picture of Angela pretty much sums up our evening: soda, chips, eyes fixed to the screen.

Superbowl XLV II

Except at the end when there was that 3-point difference. I couldn’t look!

(But I did.)

(Eventually.)

Superbowl XLV IX

For every interception that took place on the screen, there was a can of soda that got stolen by George.

His sugar cravings were more than met last night.

I’m just saying.

Superbowl XLV IV

And tell me this. Is there anything cuter than a little kid with pom-poms? (Thank you, Charlotte!)

Superbowl XLV VI

I submit that there is not.

Superbowl XLV III

You can argue the team colors if you want.

My main premise goes undefeated!

Superbowl XLV V

And even if your team didn’t make it, you can watch the game for the funny commercials. (Obviously.) By the end of the night, I’d picked a favorite: the CarMax Kid-in-a-Candy-Store commercial.

Did you miss it? Here it is.

The Darth Vader one was also fun.

There were other commercials (Read: GoDaddy) that we chose to click away from. Look, I know some of them can be indecent. We are called to be in the world but not of it, right?! I told my son that if he were in France…for example…he would see much worse on some of the billboards.

Still.

Superbowl XLV I

He knows when to look away.

Final commentary:

  • Yay! Go Packers! Good job to both teams! I couldn’t help but rejoice for Aaron Rodgers. It wasn’t his finest hour (and I thought that for most of the game he looked like his stomach hurt), but he took a giant leap out of that mammoth shadow, and for that I commend him.
  • I didn’t really care about the lyrical mishaps of Christine Aquilera. What bugged me more were all bells & whistles and frills & trills she added as she sang it. It’s the National Anthem and she has a beautiful voice. Could you please sing the song so we can recognize it?
  • The half-time performance was fun for the most part. We clicked away during the bare tummies bit, then came back for the rest of the show. The electric costumes were very cool and reminded me a bit of the Beijing Olympics. The music? Eh. To each his or her own.

And on that note, we will see you next year. Will I be waving purple & gold? Good gracious but I hope so!

Yes we watched the big game too! As you we consumed pop and more snacks than usual, so the children enjoyed that very much. My 5 year old son very excited the Packers won. His teacher is from Wisconsin, so he knew she would be very happy today. Loved the pictures. Looked exactly like our house. Have a great day.

Oh yeah, we watched and shook our pompoms too! We made garlic chicken pizza and gazpacho dip. We did not have Doritos, but I sure wanted some by the end of the night. We watched some of the commercials, but most we turned off. Didn't even bother with the half-time show. I saw Christina's flub and think she should have stuck to singing it straight instead of with all her usual vocal embellishments. Anyone can get confused on lyrics in a high pressure situation… that's all the more reason to keep it simple, in my opinion. It shouldn't be sung as a solo performance, but sung by a strong singer who leads the rest of the fans.

I make the kids turn round in their chairs for all of the commercials, that's just the way we roll, so they're used to it. (actually, the only tv we do is Packers games). Very happy with the game of course! 😀 Yeah, it was tense at times, yikes, but I'm so proud of Aaron and how the team stayed together (overall!) despite the injuries.

Honestly, in terms of the National Anthem, it seems like it's often botched! My sons loved the half-time show, my daughter ignored it, and I had to look away from all the flashing lights etc because it was triggering my vertigo.

Ha! Funny you should call me on that, Terri, because I DID indeed ask my husband to take it down yesterday. (I was fine with keeping it up until Candlemas.) His response? It's Superbowl Sunday!

    And I agreed.

Can I tell you how relieved I am to know that I am not the last person to take down our Christmas tree? We only took ours down on Saturday. I was thinking that if we didn't take it down within the next week, we would have to do what the Elizabeth Foss's family did and make a Valentine's tree. You can still do that since yours is still up! 😉

thanks for this margaret! we watched glimpses of the game (as the sick queen-me-had a movie fest instead) so we missed those…and i really wanted to see the darth vader one! we did oh-so-enjoy all those doritos commercials a few days ago…and yes, our tree is gone. it was a SERIOUS fire hazard, so in the interest of safety, it is gone!

    happy monday, friend!

Oh, Margaret! That looks JUST like our house! Down to the toddler swiping the pop.

And all of your colors were CORRECT!

We had Doritos in the house, but it is the traditional sour cream and onion dip I cannot stay out of.

I couldn't believe the sound was flubbed so many times on such a big event. The half-time show would have been bad anyway, but the sound flubs made it excrutiating.

We did like the lit up green guys, though :).

Thanks for again making me feel as if we are twin daughters of a different mother!

Very similar but we had queso in addition to chips. This IS Texas after all. Same scenario with toddler stealing soda too.
We always keep the remote handy for inappropiate commercials. At least this year Viagra/Cialis et al were absent, the godaddy ads were bad enough.
VW Darth Vader wins my vote hands down.

I'm with you on the commercials. I watched a preview show on NFL the night before, so I knew which ones to mute…even if I thought a couple of them were pretty funny…in an adult humor way.
I just put our tiny tree away this week. we had a 6 year old's birthday party on Sat….had to get it out of the living room!
though I like the Valentine tree idea. We were not officially rooting for either team (being a Giant fan) but my Mom grew up in western PA…stilll…we rroted for the Packers…that nice Aaron Rogers…in a sweet young man sort of way….lol. (I loved that post) …we went out to dinner with my MIL early in the evening, so no one ate ANYTHING during the game. That was odd : )
    Blessings!

Oh yes, we watched. And ate…a lot. But we had tortas, macaroni salad, grilled jalepenos covered in olive oil and salt…and several snacky types of food.

    It was so good.

I kept missing the commercials so I just now saw two of them via your post…thank you.

The half time show, I did see, only my eldest was interested in watching all the other kids went riding their scooters.

    It was ok…I danced (:

    Hey Margaret,
Totally agree on your take on the National Anthem: Lovely girl, lovely voice, wonderful, awe-inspiring song, please just sing it like it was intended. While I've heard of the Black Eyed Peas, I was not familiar with their music, and am still not after last night. Loved the electric costumes – very neat. The commercials for the most part were underwhelming. The Doritos commercial where the guy licked the other guy's fingers was just way too weird. Everyone here gave a collective "Yuck". By the way, my sister-in-law has a tradition to leave her Christmas tree up every year until after Super Bowl, so you are not alone! Hope all is well in Minnesota~

Yes, we watched, ate Doritos and Tostitos (with dip), mini tacos, and taco salad……

I feel the same as you about the National Anthem — let's keep it recognizable! As Charlotte stated, I feel it shouldn't be sung as a solo performance, but sung by a strong singer who leads the rest of the fans. Loved the fly-over, as usual.

Commercials: I like the VW Darth Vader one, and hubby liked the Detroit (w/Eminem) Chrysler one. They were all pretty understated, in our opinion. (We too use the remote so we don't have to watch go daddy, etc.)

Half-time show – like you said, to each his or her own: I got our little guy tucked into bed for the night, and don't feel I missed a thing.

Completely agree with the middle of your final comments! How I wished for a beautiful, simple National Anthem. Otherwise, we really enjoyed the game and the outcome 🙂 I agree, Aaron Rogers wasn't himself. Just glad they hung on till the end. Watchin' for the Vikings next year!
