The Beaten Track

February 8, 2010 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Growing Up, Hearth & Home, Minnesota Me, Motherhood 11 Comments

One never knows, at the break of day, what the next twelve hours will bring.

Snow—and lots of it—is what this morning had in store for us. I stepped outside to get the paper and stepped right into the…

The Beaten Track I

Snow.

Were it not for that red skirt, they might never have found me.

Beaten Track II

Snow can be plenty cozy, though, especially when you’re staying in. My oldest son had no such luxury today—he broke a path and off he went.

Beaten Track III

Thank you, Lord, for car pools.

I got an email last week from an online friend, who wondered how things were going with my oldest at school. “It’s going really well,” I told her, “But it can be hard, sending your child off into the unknown like that.”

Beaten Track VI

It can actually be kind of creepy, you know? Like you have no real control over their heart, mind or soul.

Because, in the end, you don’t.

It’s a free will thing, like going up to their bedroom to put something away and finding…

Beaten Track VIII

…that they did indeed shine their shoes like you asked them. Black polish! And lots of it.

Sighing, you go on with your day. You empty the dishwasher and there you find…

The Beaten Track VI

…that rinsing the dishes before loading them is always Just an Option.

At least it’s clean rice.

Sighing, you go on with your day, thankful especially for the fun & cuddles & belly rolls of your baby. You smooth on the lotion but have to be quick, because…

Beaten Track IV

…like all of your children, this boy craves freedom.

Beaten Track V
“Freedom!”

It’s a William Wallace thing, only without all the blue paint.

It’s uncanny, really, how early it starts. They need to know the world that’s out there, even if it’s the world inside. This is my life–an ordinary life–but it’s never dull and never drab.

It’s my beaten path, my colorful world.

The Beaten Track VII

My colorful, carpet-stained, rice-covered world.

(Seriously, though? Two carpet incidents in one day is too much, even for this ordinary girl.)

I'm thinking black carpet might be a better choice!

Silly me, I noticed the made-up bed and was a little envious! Hopefully the carpets came clean … two incidents in one day is a bit much. I don't even want to talk about dishwashers!!

We had our first carpet incident in the rental today ~ hot chocolate. Sigh. I think I handled it OK, but I am on edge all.the.time thinking about not getting that damage deposit back. LOL! I think we're going to need to get a BIG beat up rug to put under the table. Eating meals with five children with carpet underneath is a very bad idea … And I've been unloading less-than-clean dishes out of the dishwasher lately, too. Even when I rinse them first. Sigh. One more appliance quirk: My "new" washing machine keeps stopping, as if it's off balance, but it's not. I have figured out that if I put something heavy on top of the washer it doesn't do that. Never dull or drab is right. Thanks be to God!

So funny & too true!:) The dishwasher is hilarious! Ours is the same…we have to clean the dishes before "sanitizing" them in the dishwasher.:( Today one of my daughters commented her glass was dirty as she drank her milk. I told her to pour the milk into a clean glass because usually the residual stuff is baked onto the glass & you can still get the clean milk out. She said, "The stuff is floating on top of the milk!" I was so frustrated! Oh, well, thanks be to God, right.;)

You have my empathy! I discovered yesterday morning that my seven-year-old had used my white bathroom handtowel to clean the face paint off his face Saturday night! Why he couldn't have used the dark maroon one in his bathroom I don't know. Thanks for reminding us to find the good and humor in all life's little surprises.

You have just shown me that I should not covet my neighbor's dishwasher… 🙂

First I must make a disclaimer: I've never used it on black shoe polish nor red crayon, BUT
Whenever you have a stubborn stain in a carpet (including your vehicle's carpet or upholstery) use Windex to get it out. Spray the Windex directly on the stain and use a nail brush to scrub it out. Viola! A salesman for a nationally known carpet cleaner told me that almost 25 years ago, and I have used it on everything from blue frosting on a white carpet, to grease on car seats. I've shared that with my sister, (her husband restores cars) and they've used it to clean both upholstery and floors in antique cars. IT WORKS!!

    now feeling completely inadequate.
you can see your carpet (no clothes, no toys, and his bed is made) and it is clean. No mystery dark spots from long ago contraband glasses of milk or juice, no silly putty remnants ground in….you could actually sell your house without having to replace all the carpeting first.

    ;;;;sigh;;;;

    Margaret,

Carpet stains make me want to cry. I will have to try the windex technique. I have had enough of the weather, but I look at it this way, we were just rated #6 for worst winter weather by Forbes magazine. Cleveland was rated #1 for worst weather. This is huge for me since I have a best friend who teases me about living here and now he is rated as having the worst weather. Yippee. Victory, finally. Of course, I still wish I lived in Cleveland because it is always sunny when you live by the people you love and cherish.

Oh wow. I barely even noticed the stain on the floor. I have no recommendations for carpet stains, except for perhaps moving the furniture around to cover it?
