Calling All Ornithologists!

December 8, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Keeping It Real, Minnesota Me 15 Comments

Right now there are birds all over our yard.

The Birds II

Great big gigantic clumps of them.

The Birds III

It’s freaky. It’s like a movie.

I keep waiting for Tippi Hedren to come trolling up to the dock.

The Birds I

Why are they here? What are they eating?

Is it safe to leave the house?

We get this too, by the thousands sometimes and it creeps me out. It IS just like a Hitchcock movie and I think of it every time.
I think they might be starlings….they do that. And thus, not my favorite bird.
Now you need some spooky jangly music in the background and you're good to go: home movie!

I'm assuming they know where you live and just had to stop on in at Margaret's!:) That, and that they are gathering in anticipation for the snow you are about to get later today! Stay Warm!

    So they're starlings?

    Maybe?

That gives us a point of reference. We can go look them up in our bird book…

…and then go get my husband's rifle.

    I'm kidding!

    Kind of.

    LOL!!
I remember the kids running into the house screaming in fear. The cause to this maddness…about 20 something crows desending down on our yard. It was soooo creepy, then really funny. We ended up renting "The Birds" later that week.

Here's a third vote for starlings. Not that I'm anything like an expert. But we get huge flocks of them like that in our yard too.

You could leave the house, but probably would be a good idea to put your umbrella up!!

"why is your driveway so white?" that's what i wanted to ask you. then i thought maybe it was just some funky exposure. then i realized… it's snow.

    it IS snow, isn't it?

we've had those birds so thick in our yard you could not see the grass!

Did you know you inspired me to start a blog? Thank you!

No idea what kind of bird you are dealing with, but they're probably trying to stock up on food before it's covered in snow!

Mags my dear, they are indeed starlings, completely harmless and they do indeed flock together, always!!! Glad you got to glimpse them, we had thousands in Idaho, not so many here on the coast, but fun to see nonetheless wherever you are!! They love the grass seed! Toodles!

Yes, starlings. We see them by the thousands at times in nearby fields.
I don't care what anyone says, I think they are creepy.

Those are starlings. Some people are obsessed with ridding the planet of them. Apparantly they wreck havoc wherever they go.

While they are mostly starlings, blackbirds tend to mix in flocks. Take a close look and see if you can find any odd-balls, especially brown-headed cowbirds.

As for what they are eating…basically, anything. I have even seen them eat used charcoal from a grill. Mm. Tasty.

Wow, thanks for this post – now I have the answers to the same questions. I had the same thing in my yard here in NJ this past week. You could not see the grass as there were so many birds! My baby made a noise and off they took, just the noise of them all taking off and flapping their wings at the same time was so loud. It was actually kind of cool and creepy at the same time.
