On Making Chocolate Chip Scones and Not Missing My Sons

April 27, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Hearth & Home, Minnesota Me, Motherhood, My Boys 13 Comments

Or at least some of that.

So the dynamics of this house have changed considerably since the departure of my two sons. For those of you who have fallen out of the Minnesota Mom loop, shame on you! An update: they are down on Grandpa’s farm taking care of these horses:

And playing with this dog:

Sans the sister.

You would think that my house would be quieter, wouldn’t you? No, you wouldn’t think that because you would know that there are still, after all, lots of girls here.

And those three little women can be loud.

Last night, after an early supper and worn out by the goings-on of the day, I asked my husband if I could go take a bubble bath. (Another recurring theme of the blog these days: She’s big! She’s pregnant! She’s tired! She’s coping!) The bubble bath venture proved to be so relaxing that I segued from the cotton of the bath towel to the flannel of the bed.

“I’m just going to read my book for a bit, and then I’ll go help with the kitchen clean-up.”

Uh-huh.

Right.

I remember my husband snapping off the light with a smile, and then I drifted off into a dream-laden sleep. I dreamt that my husband cleaned the kitchen without me, and that instead of putting the left-overs into a container, he merely scraped them into the fridge as is.

I woke with a start and went to check on my husband.

The kitchen was clean, as per the dream.

The mac & cheese, though?

Safely tupperwared.

Praying you are well, dear Internet Friend! Here in the great state of Minnesota it is both a rainy day and a Monday, but I’m doing my best not to pull a Karen Carpenter. I am breaking out the brand new coloring markers, and I am not worrying about Swine Flu.

Are you?

All for the greater glory of God,

So, you had me at Chocolate Chip Scones… now I'm craving them. Maybe I'll make popovers instead.

Now, if my boys were gone visiting Grandpa, the house would be significantly quieter!! My daughter is just like me and can read or play paper dolls in the solitude of her room for hours.

At the opposite end of the pregnancy spectrum, I can relate to the tired aspect. I cannot ever remember being this tired at this point in pregancy … I am taking my vitamins in the faint hope that they will give me the energy I so desperately want and NEED. Not working, yet.

It's gloomy here, but no more rain or snow. That is something to be happy about! The lawn in my in-laws yard is starting to green up & cheers me, too.

Swine flu? Nope. According to the BBC News last night it is an H1N1 virus – a tweak on an old strain, which should be quite easy to vaccinate against, and most people are likely to have a fair amount of immunity. Nothing like as serious a threat as the avian flu that was in the news a year or so ago.

I’m wigging out about the swine flu quite honestly. One more thing to be worried about catching, right? You’re hubby and mine are twins, I tell ya….I couldn’t do anything without him (mine of course…not yours! lol!) Hope the boys have a great time.

I’m not exactly *worried* about the swine flu, but I do in fact think that my three year old and I have it. I may go to the dr. tomorrow to get tested. I called the local health dept today though and they totally blew me off. I guess they’re not concerned about a pandemic.

I notice my girls are loud. There is three girls in this house and 4 boys. The three girls make easily twice as much noise as the boys. When the girls aren’t here you can hear a pin drop in our house.

    Hi Margaret

Oh, dear! I think Karen Carpenter’s Rainy Days and Mondays mood was created because she had to wear that yellow dress and her hair do sucked! Poor lamb!

I only have one girl home now and things are very quiet unless she is on the Wii or has Techno blaring from her room.

So nice to be on this count-down with you – please enjoy many more bubble baths.

    Cheers – Joolz

I’m not worrying about swine flu but my husband is. Big time. So to make him feel better I am doing as he asks me and stocking the pantry super-full. I figure if a full load of canned goods is all it takes to put his mind at ease, who am I to say no?

It’s a gloomy Monday here too – I’m struggling to have energy with all these gray skies (though you’d think I’d be used to it living in the Northwest!)… Swine Flu? Nope, not exactly worried. From what I’ve read the people who have caught it in this country haven’t been any more sick than with any other flu… and I have my homeopathic meds for that 🙂 (my family responds really well to those).

Enjoy those bubble baths, Margaret, you deserve them!

If only you knew how many of us are slugging it out each day right there with you – not that we’re all pregnant but we’re with you in spirit as you race (?) to the finish line. Can’t wait for you to raise your arms and break the ribbon! You and yours are in our prayers ~

We’re in Houston, TX and I am in fact concerned about the swine flu. I never follow doctor’s recommendations to keep baby away from crowds here for 6 weeks (after all, I HAVE to go to Mass and the grocery store, right?) but I will this time. Houston is such a big city with such a mix of people coming through… I want to be extra careful with Baby Four.

Also, my sister is doing missions work in Mexico City. She’s been there a year, and with the swine flu plus earthquakes yesterday… man, I am worried about her.

I’m a little ashamed to say that I am worried about the swine flu. We live in Arizona, and with the large amount of immigration here, well, let’s just say I’m worried.

I had planned on Toddlertime at the library today, and the park on Thursday, and now I’m considering cancelling. Then again, we can’t just hole up for the rest of our lives, afraid of everything the media says threatens us. I don’t know, prevention is probably the key, but with a 2 year old that sucks his thumb, I’m not quite sure how to keep those yucky germs from him.

Oh, my stars. I read the end first — the Karen C part and I thought, “Dear heavens, does she mean die much too young of a heart attack caused by an eating disorder?” No. This is NOT what you meant. I love, love, love Karen and I am not ashamed. As you recall I also somethimes watch Lawrence Welk.

I bet those boys are tired at the end of the day! Maybe as tired as their mama? 😉
