The Shortcut

March 1, 2009 by Minnesota Mom Filed Under: Minnesota Me, My Girls, Parenting, Spiritual Growth 12 Comments

I’m sure you’ve all experienced this. You’re herding your children back from Communion and one of them cuts into the wrong pew. Most kids look confused for a second, and then hastily beat a retreat when they realize the tall folks there don’t look familiar.

Angela did this today. On our way back she mistakenly entered the pew 2 rows ahead of ours. Again, this is nothing new because with Angela, especially, it is crucial that one (or both) of us bring up the rear. I snapped my fingers to redirect her but she had already realized her mistake.

Except, in Angela’s opinion, this wasn’t a mistake; it was, rather, an opportunity. She catapulted herself over the back of the pew with a resounding whump!

And then she rejoined us in our row.

Happy First Sunday of Lent, everyone! I hope yours has been as…humbling as mine. (Because humility’s a good thing, right?)

I can relate. My almost 4-yo made his entrance on Ash Wednesday. As he reluctantly followed us down the side aisle into the silent church, he leaned up against the rough plaster wall and slid along it. It sounded like someone had turned on a faucet full force to fill up an empty plastic bucket…in church. Thank goodness we are in a small parish – and I was able to laugh along with EVERYONE.

Thank you for the chuckle. We all laughed. (Well, except Bella who was mad because I shushed her so everyone else could hear.)

Oh, absolutely as humbling. Darling Cherub has been potty training. At Mass yesterday, she waited until there was silence before Holy Communion, pulled her trousers down and announced, loudly and repeatedly, “look at my panties!” to dd2’s friend who was sitting with us. I was too busy trying to shush her to realise the trousers were at half mast. Stifled giggling and spluttering from all the pews around us. Gulp.

    Could have been much worse

I was at a weekday Mass with my two year old son, very heavily pregnant and my son managed to get past me into the centre aisle. Father had just sat down after his homily and the church was silent. Many of the people present knew my son very well, I couldnt move quickly and hoped somebody would grab him. He called my name, I prayed very hard for someone to grab him, he called again, I prayed even harder, all the time he was getting nearer and nearer to the front of the church, then he called a third time, stuck his thumbs in his ears, waggled his fingers and shouted “Mum, you can’t catch me, nah nah”. Fortunately somebody then managed to grab him, I looked like a very red hippo and our priest was laughing out loud.

And I do have another story, even worse!
